Keep the Heat on the Writer

Much as I hate having to beg for money, here goes.  A lot of you enjoy my books Strange Roads and The Demon That Is Dreaming.  I enjoy writing them and people buying them.  It's hard enough writing when working a forty-hour job, worse when it involves kitchen labor.  As my employer, a historical society, decided to "go in a different direction" very abruptly (one that involved not paying salaried staff) three days before Christmas 2014 I found myself out of work with no warning.   On the plus side, I have twenty weeks of unemployment and lots of free time to work on book three, A Hot and Copper Sky.  On the down side, I have no income other than unemployment and what I can get off books and Etsy sales (which of course come with overhead) and the gas bill, mortgage, power, food, and health insurance where my premium just went up by $70 but which I legally can't not buy.  I am applying for jobs, but of course that eats up time, too, and as many of you know is kind of a soul-crushing process.  I'll be looking into vending at art fairs, flea markets, and genre events as the weather gets warmer, but those opportunities are thin on the ground right now.  That doesn't include unforseen events (like getting the kitchen skylight replaced before the next thaw caves in the roof.)

So here's the deal: I don't like begging for money.  It's embarassing.  But I'm willing to entertain the notion of a GoFundMe with some perks.  For donations above $75, if you want, I will send you signed copies of both paperbacks and a few other little goodies (pending confirmation from the artist.)  For donations above $250, you get signed copies of the paperbacks, aforementioned goodies, and you get to name a character in book 3 or 4 (names must not be trademarks, previously-published fictional characters, or grossly unsuitable to the universe.  I determine who the character is.)  Donate $500 or more and in addition to the above, I'll do a short story set in either the Omens universe, or in the universe featured in Number Nine Penwiper Mews and the upcoming Night Train to Cherbourg.  Story is up to 5000 words and would feature any previously-appearing character in either set of stories, donor's choice.  I determine the plot, and it would maintain the PG-13 rating of the published works.  Or you can opt to donate out of the goodness of your heart, which is also appreciated.

Again, I hate begging.  But my job options are 'keep sending out resumes' versus 'try to find very low-paying, physically draining work.'  I'm going to keep doing the former, I'd prefer not to have to resort to the latter, especially as it kills productivity.

. “You’re Lord Joszef Kiraly, gentleman and vampire, originally from Budapest. Your family has been in trade and shipping for generations, as a vampire scion you don’t seem inclined to play in that area much except when delicate issues necessitate, and you are known from Vienna to Scotland Yard as a consulting detective of unusual skill. You’ve recently been living in London on your dower income while dabbling in strange investigations only when they pique your interest, most notably the Frastley kidnaping. Have I missed anything?”

Do not miss Joszef Kiraly, Gentleman, Vampire in "Night Train To Cherbourg." Your donations mean sooner rather than later! Thanks to the donors so far!

"Night Train To Cherbourg" is almost finished, and the outline for "A Hot and Copper Sky" is done (though there is plenty of room if you'd like to donate at the Silver level to name a character, especially if you've got someone in your life you wish would disappear. GREAT character-name opening there....)

Update on the unemployment: Not getting any yet. Apparently a gap between end and start dates of five days is to the Michigan Unemployment Insurance agency not a valid 'leaving to take other employment' (despite having other employment offered and accepted.) So while my protest is being investigated income is still zero.
