Dear Family, Friends and Friends of Friends,
Back in July 2014 I was getting ready for my sister’s visit. We are very close and love each other, and treasure the time we spend together. I moved to SF some years ago, while she stayed in Belgrade, Serbia. In preparation for her visit, she told me she wanted to see a doctor for what she thought was a small sinus infection. Unfortunately, it was much much worse and it changed our lives.
Shewas was diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma cancer alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the nasal sinus (ethmoidal region), metastatic to locoregional lymphnodes and bone marrow.
She took on a very aggressive form of treatment, that pushed her to the edge, but she fought incredibly well, and kept pushing thru in this hard fight. After 9 cycles of aggressive chemotherapy and 30 days of radiation, our hope grew and our prayers were about to be answered. Her treatments finished in March 2015 and she was in remission. Her recovery began and we thought her pain and suffering was behind her. Our hopes were growing with each day.
By September 2015 she went back to work, went back to things she loves – theater, arts, music, spending time with her friends and family – and going for nice walks in nature.
She has always been a fighter. I looked up to her my whole life. As my older sister – she has always been my role model for resilience and determinaotion. And in this last chapter, she showed what a champion she was. We all hoped, and prayed that the fight was over.
And it was…almost. In April 2016, one year after her last treatments, another routine checkup brought some bad news - doctors found that cancer was back.
Bojana, my champ and my hero, is taking on this challenge as another and hopefully last round in her fight on the path to victory against cancer. But the challenges are greater this time around.
Resources our family and friends were able to pool in the first round have been depleted. As the treatment is very expensive in Belgrade, Serbia since most of the medications are imported and monthly cost of the treatment is 3x the monthly income, we are turning to our friends and their friends and all other people of good will for help.
