On April 12th 2015 I am lacing up my sneakers and beginning my 500 mile journey for Team Bili to raise money for The Bili Project Foundation.

I am taking on this challenge in honor of my brother Nicky John, a brave man with a big heart, who was given 21 short days to live after being diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer).   Cholangiocarcinoma is part of the Hepatobiliary cancers and is a fast acting, silent, underfunded and understudied disease.  Consequently, there were no treatment options for Nick.

There are many others out there just like Nick who are diagnosed with this disease but sadly told there is no hope because treatment options are extremely limited.  This “catch me if you can” cancer is little known, but is among the most lethal types of cancers and hardest to detect.

The Bili Project Foundation has partnered with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and other institutions across the United States to research early detection and treatment options of Hepatobiliary Cancers.  In 2012, The Bili Project Foundation helped UCSF launch California’s first Hepatobiliary Tissue Tumor Bank (HBTB) as the groundwork for advancing research in these rare and challenging diseases.  From this bank, UCSF has been able to share tissue samples and conduct meaningful research studies with other collaborating institutions across the country in this fight against Cholangiocarcinoma and other Hepatobiliary diseases.  The Bili Project is committed to maintaining UCSF’s HBTB and supporting Hepatobiliary cancer research until we win this fight!

How you can help?

Become a 'Biliever' and help me chase down this disease.  My goal is to raise a minimum of $5000.00 by putting putting teams together and walk 500 miles, and I kindly ask for your support in meeting my goal.  I need Team Captains to get groups of five or more people to help you walk and raise money.

Nick was a brave man who never stopped fighting his battle against Cholangiocarcinoma.  Therefore, I am taking on this challenge in his honor and with a hopeful spirit that The Bili Project Foundation will one day soon give hope to others fighting this terrible disease.
