In July 2011 Robbie's fight began. While his wife Kelly was pregnant with their second child, Robbie was diagnosed with Stage 3 Esophageal cancer. Their son Nicholas was 3 years old. During a time that should have been filled with expectation and excitement for the arrival of their baby, they faced extraordinary obstacles. Months of chemotherapy endured followed by surgery in December 2011 to try to rid his body of the cancer that had invaded it. Robbie was discharged just in time for the birth of their second son, Ryan in January of 2012. His recovery was a long one but he faced it head on. He hugged his children harder for he knew how precious life was. He taught Nicholas to play hockey. He watched Ryan take his first steps. He celebrated his 40th birthday with the love of his life.
Tragically on September 23, 2014 he found himself staring cancer in the face yet again as a tumor in his lung was determined to be malignant. Again, determined to beat the odds, a new battle began. Round after round of chemotherapy and yet nothing dulled his spirit. His devotion and dedication to his family powered him on through excruciating pain and sickness.
Just 2 short months later, the cancer had consumed his entire lung. And so Robbie did what he did best, he fought harder. He drew strength from his wife Kelly and their boys.
In April 2015 they received the news they perhaps had feared the most. Robbie's cancer had spread to his bones and failed to respond to any treatment he tried. Faced with the certainty of what was happening to him, he refused to let it dictate his life. He threw pitch after pitch to Nicholas to ready him for his upcoming baseball season despite the extreme fatigue he felt daily. He endured endless loops of Toy Story simply because he knew how much Ryan loved it. He got to fish with Nicholas one last time on the beach that felt like home to him for many years. He made Kelly laugh until she cried with his famous "Robbie-isms." Robbie never once lost his amazing sense of humor and his ability to make those around him laugh. He gave those around him strength while he fought this horrific battle.
In May of this year, a new tumor was discovered in Robbie's pancreas. He was given weeks to live. In typical Robbie fashion, he told the doctors that he would indeed be living longer than that. He was not yet ready to leave the wife and children he adored.
The last few weeks Robbie has been surrounded by the friends and family that loved him deeply. Kelly took amazing care of him as only a devoted spouse could do. While he fought like hell to the end, Robbie sadly lost his battle on Sunday, June 14, 2015 with his wife by his side.
In our tremendous grief, we find comfort in the memories we all shared with Robbie. His precious boys, Nicholas and Ryan, are the mirror image of him. To say they adored their Daddy would be an understatement.
While Robbie's journey is undoubtedly sad, there is a tremendous love story as well-the love he had for his wife and children.
The road ahead will be a hard one for Kelly and the boys. We hope Robbie finds comfort in knowing they will never be alone.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in loving memory of Robbie for Nicholas and Ryan Bigelow

We didn't hang in the same crowd but Robbie was always a good guy to everyone I knew. We connected a bit on FB and he shared his fight with me. I was honored that he would include me in his battle and I'm so very sorry that his fight had to end. Please accept my condolences on the loss of a great friend, husband and father.
