Homeless Boston Ma Vet & Wife Need Help

Donation protected

I’m Rebecca Johnson-McDonnell, a Communications graduate of a local Community College in Boston, and this is my husband, Mark. Mark Is a combat veteran who survived a year in Afghanistan from 2010-2011. Although he courageously fought for our country, were waging another battle stateside. We are having to have our first baby soon, a boy, and were in dire need of living arrangements for our soon-to-be growing family. My due date is mid-September 2014.

5 Months Pregnant, May 19, 2014

Mark works two jobs, including his active-duty military service. I work as an on-call substitute for various childcare agencies in Boston. Mark has been homeless since Fall, 2013 due to unforeseen & unfortunate circumstances, and since then has been bouncing from shelter to shelter in Boston, MA.

People ask "Why can't Mark just live on base?" The answer is simple: Where Mark is currently stationed, is NOT on a military base, but a smaller facility that does not have housing options.

I live in what's called an SRO. SRO stands for Single Room Occupancy, which means by law, I can't have anyone else living with me--Mark, or our soon to be son. Once I give birth to our son, I must terminate my lease with this SRO and leave.

We have looked into several alternative housing options, but so far, nothing has suffice. We have also checked Craigslist to see about renting a room/studio for our family, but we have been told no, because we are a couple--and a couple expecting a baby. We have also checked other rental sites, but have not found a place. For every no we have recieved, we keep a "stiff upper lip", but as time goes on, each no becomes more discouraging.

My Single Room Occupancy (SRO) (sorry for the mess!) this room includes: a bed, drawer, a small kitchen (with no stove) and a bathroom with stand up shower.

With no immediate family in the Boston area, as the months go on, we are running out of time. We hope that with your support, we will be able to raise the $4,000.00 needed--first month, second month, last month, and security. Our plan is to be a couple of months ahead on rent, so that we do not run into this kind of problem in the future. Any money raised that exceeds the $4,000 mark we plan on putting into a fund for our son. We were brought up with OLD FASHIONED values: to be kind to others, and we want to pay this forward anyway we can once we become more settled.

Thank you for taking the time to hear our story, we truly appreciate it. And to Mark, thank you for fighting for our country. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us. Thank you.
