Big River Barn Rescue’s Big Move

Donation protected
Dear Friends of Big River Barn Rescue, Inc:

Help!
We recently made a big move to a wonderful new barn, in an estate setting nestled in the woods of Muttontown. But the move was costly. We made the leap in the hopes that you will be there to catch us! Please back our play.

A new home!
There are so many reasons why it was a great move... This barn offers a far better quality of life for the horses, with ample pastures (sorely missing from our last location), and excellent grazing once winter is over.  It’s a more convenient location, closer to most of you (particularly those of you in the City), and to our homes, too.  And it’s on a truly spectacular trail system, my favorite around.

We’ll have the beautiful, historic barn all to ourselves.  It’s county property, so it won’t be sold out from under us.   And we won’t face early curfews and blacked-out days (even holidays!), we won’t have to pay exorbitant annual permit fees to use the trails, and we won’t need a key and a permit tag to get onto the trails.

We want to share all this with you.

However, to close the deal we had to invest many thousands of dollars in capital improvements and other costs. We built a second fence around the paddocks, we upgraded the lights in the barn, we ran water out to the paddocks, and we filed the paperwork to incorporate as a not for profit. Plus, our annual insurance premium came due, all while the monthly costs of keeping horses accrued, all during the slow, expensive (more shavings & hay etc) months of winter.

Yikes!

We are committed for the long term, so we made the leap. But please back our play! Help us get through this rough period with a contribution.

What is Big River Barn Rescue Inc?
BRBR, inc. is a place where you can realize the dream of riding a wonderful horse on spectacularly beautiful trails through remote woods and fields, right here in the overdeveloped suburbs of the New York City metropolitan area.

Plus, our horses are rescues.  We take horses in need and we make a long-term commitment to their welfare. We give them a home, a family/herd (of humans/horses), and a job so they can contribute to supporting themselves.

Many of our horses came from the racetrack, usually injured. Cayalle and Prima Dahna came to us after their owner fell sick and died; they might have gone to slaughter (chills me to contemplate!). Injured horses are given time to heal (Timpanic was out of commission for a full year with his injury). We’ve carried a number of horses into their retirement too, including our namesake, Big River.

But who rescues who?  Horses make human life better; spending time with them is good for you.  We want to share our horses with everyone.

All skill levels are welcome on our trail rides, including first time riders. We offer instruction on how to ride a horse (equitation) and how to understand who the horse is (horsemanship). Our emphasis is on enjoying horses, not entering competitions with them (not that there’s anything wrong with that), nor perfectionism.

We celebrate access to open spaces in suburbia, and personal  relationships with animals. Everyone should have the opportunity to experience the magic of the natural world from the back of a horse.

We look forward to expanding our offerings to include equine education (hands-on horse care) and children’s programs.

Contribute
We have applied for not-for-profit 501(c)3 status, but we are still awaiting final approval. So any contributions today may not be tax deductible.

However, I’m told that IF we receive approval this year, the status applies retroactively for all of 2019, in which case any contributions made to BRBR inc today would be tax deductible. But I’m no tax expert; check with your own tax advisor.

Here’s an incentive: if you bundle contributions of $500 or more, I’ll take you out riding, as a thank you. Be sure to contact me directly to coordinate it.

Please consider making a contribution because...

—You came riding with me, and it was a great day.
— You love animals and want to support their welfare; and you appreciate our spirit of sharing the horses with everyone
—you want to support the enjoyment of preserved open spaces on Long Island
—You know me personally (or you know someone who knows me), and want to stand with me and support my mission.

Thanks!
