Bay Area NP News Startup

$1,500 goal

Campaign created 8 months ago
Bay Area Non-Profit News  is a blog whose mission is to amplify the voices of existing non-profits that serve the Monterey Bay Area of California, with the goal of raising awareness of the services they provide and making a difference in the community, one shout-out at a time.

We have determined that we can accomplish this mission best as a 501(c)(3) corporation. At this point, all expenses are being paid out of the pocket of our founder, Lynda Williams. That was fine when the expenses were web design and hosting, and photo and video coverage of non-profits and their events. Lynda has access to all of that because of her extensive background in web design and marketing, and already owns all the equipment and software needed to get the job done.

But now there are costs involved that are breaking the bank, meaning she has to decide whether to pay personal bills or pay for the expenses that Bay Area Non-Profit News is incurring.

So we're reaching out to our community to help us raise those start-up funds. We have begun the process of becoming a 501(c)(3) through Legal Zoom, but it will be four to six weeks before donations will be tax deductible. But your donations will help be the tide that raises all boats in the Santa Cruz County non-profit community.

Our main concern now are the costs of incorporating  - fees to Legal Zoom and to the state. Other costs are subscriptions and memberships to publications and associations for support as we build and grow the non-profit, including access to free and discounted marketing and equipment services. We will also need to do some migrating of Lynda's existing services from her ownership to ownership of BANP, such as web hosting and software subscriptions, and telephone service, as usage of those services must be exclusive to BANP and Lynda will no longer be able to use them for her other activities.

We're setting our fundraiser goal at $1,500 in order to cover all those costs, and in order to open and maintain a bank account. In the interest of transparency, here are the numbers indicating what the funds will be used for.

Known fixed costs at this point include:

Legal Zoom: Economy Non-Profit Corporation set-up  - $738.95
Annual cost for Registered Agent services - $159.00
                            Business support services - $7.99/month

Estimated costs at start-up include :

Annual Association and Subscription dues, which enable us to get free business support and discounted services:

California Association of Non-Profits - $75.00/yr - includes access to all services of the National Council of Non-Profits

Nonprofit Quarterly Digital Subscription  - $49/yr - provides information to assist non-profits in accomplishing their missions more easily and cost-effectively, among other things

eVoice Solutions  - transfer of Lynda's existing account, which includes a phone number and two lines - $12.99/mo

Other costs will include setting up the blog on it's own hosting account, which is now hosted on Lynda's personal hosting server through GoDaddy, and any other infrastructure costs that will separate BANP expenses from Lynda's personal expenses

These known costs total $1,042.00, leaving $458.00 to cover surprise or as yet unknown start-up costs, and still have a balance in the bank account in order to keep it open.

And now for the stuff you're waiting for - levels and rewards! Normally, these are things that you see in Kickstarter or other for-profit business fundraisers, not on GoFundMe, but I wanted some concrete appreciation right out of the gate.

Do your remember the story of the Indian ruler who was so happy with the man who brought him the game of chess, that he offered him a reward of his own choosing? The shrewd chess master, who was also a mathemetician, made what seemed like a modest request, using the chessboard to keep track. Simply place one grain of wheat on the the first square, two grains on the second square, four on the third, eight on the fourth, and so on until the chess board was covered in rice.

The king was delighted and ordered it done. It didn't take long for the king to realize that he'd been tricked! The exponential of the growth of the grains of wheat was going to fill the palace soon! By the eleventh square the board was covered in rice, and by the 20th square more than a million grains of rice were piling up in the room! In the end, the count of wheat grains would be 18,446,744,073,709,551,615!

Please consider giving a dollar, and sharing with your friends with a request to share and give a dollar, and so on, and so on...
