More Art Power! for more children

Donativo protegido
I’ve let this fundraiser go quiet for a while because, well, I hate to constantly ask for money, but in truth, the kids rely on your donations to keep Art Power going. UPDATE:  April 2019–We have a promise from the Premiere Foundation, based in South Carolina, to match our funds if we can raise $4500.  of our $9000 goal.  Your dollar is worth double now!  Please be a part of bringing more Art Power to more kids!!

Art Power is a grass roots 501c3 that truly believes that art and creativity can change the world.  We are dedicated to improving the lives of children using the transformative power of creativity.

We operate in Cozumel Mexico where we have a use of a studio building for a barter agreement for a period 2 years starting July 2018.  Located in a far neighborhood, we open 4 days a week to serve the under-served children of Cozumel. Many of the children who come to the studio are from the working poor families, mother-less or father-less families, and older siblings are often left to care for several younger siblings all day.  Their time in the art studio at Casa de la Creatividad gives them respite from the stresses of poverty, neglect, abuse...If they weren’t in the studio, they would be running in the streets often unsupervised or unattended while parents work. Creating art lowers blood pressure, lowers stress, increases feelings of security, increases feelings of love and nurturing. The Casa de la Creatividad studio has become a safe place for the kids to come. Their creative time helps them to develop expression, self esteem, confidence.  Creating art also helps them to have higher rates of success in school by increasing communications between the left and right hemispheres of the brain and increasing focus.

Currently the limitations of available help (from volunteers and the founder and director of the program - me) allows the studio to be open only 15 hours a week.  We often have to turn away kids, because of lack of available space/time. In August and September we saw 579 child visits to our program during the 32 days we were open,  and just about 100 unique children served.  The program could better serve the children if we could increase our hours—to 20 hours a week during the school session, and 26 hours a week when school is out.

The money raised here would be dedicated to hiring a permanent assistant to help run the studio. The position would be between 24-30 hours a week.  The $9000 usd would fund a fairly paid position for 1 year and would include all legally required bonuses, taxes, and social security.  Our pledge is to make a positive contribution to the local economy by creating a job and hiring a Mexican national, and further integrate our non-profit in to the local culture.

Our goal is to hire an assistant as soon as possible to increase our positive effect with the children.  Can you help?
