Art Fills the Void Graffiti Removal

In July 2015, Portland Street Art Alliance organized the full restoration of the famous Art Fills the Void! mural (at SE 12th and Division), Portland’s oldest community mural. An original member of Gorilla Wallflare (the group that painted Art Fills the Void! in 1982), muralist Frank DeSantis, provided PSAA with original photos of the mural and stencils. Working with a dedicated team of volunteers over a week, PSAA restored the mural back to its original 1982 state for the first time in its history, following 33 years of tagging, buffing, and ad hoc community re-painting.
PSAA received a small neighborhood grant from SE Uplift to cover most of the costs of restoring the mural (paint, supplies, etc.) but we did not receive enough funding to cover the cost of coating it with an anti-graffiti protective clear coat (that makes removing graffiti far easier). PSAA secured a 75% off discount on this coating (plus free labor) from Graffiti Removal Services (GRS). The rest of the cost was covered by the crowd-source funding and by PSAA directors.
Even though it is a very well respected mural in the communtiy, even by those who do graffiti, sometimes people from out of town come through and tag the mural. The protective clear coating makes this tagging much easier to clean off by just wiping it away, or powerwashing it, but we still need to raise periodic funds to pay for re-applying the top layer wax coating after it's washed off.
Each time this needs to be done, it costs PSAA about $200-$300 to pay for GRS to provide us this service.
