Aquaponics For Vets

Hello! My name is Austin Young. I am a 27 year husband/father who recently separated from the military. I currently am starting a project to bring our military and non military members together to fight PTSD in a new way and I need your input or advice. My project is to start an indoor aquaponics home garden that provides more than enough fish and vegetables to feed a family of 4. The rest of the food will be donated to food shelters in the Charleston SC area.This home garden will also serve as a working model for a once a month class that I will put on for anyone who would like to provide food for their families and community. Military members will be free and non military will be asked to donate a small amount to help keep the class going. If a donation is given on here from a non military person, you can also attend the class.What is aquaponics? Aquaponics is any system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, or crayfish in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. Now why aquaponics and how does it help fight PTSD? Gardening in general is a very therapeutic way to help clear ones thoughts while providing food and medicine for your family and community. When the product of your hard work contributes to your family and friend's well being you can feel a sense of purpose that is often lost when exiting the military or while struggling with PTSD. Some people find that having control over an environment brings the control back into their life that PTSD can take away.This campaign is not just to raise awareness but to also help our Vets to overcome this life treating disorder.
