Annalise Lujan is my 12 year old second cousin, who contracted a rare and life altering form of brain disease.
One in a million children who get ordinary colds or stomach viruses suffer a rare complication where either the virus spreads to the brain or causes a type of autoimmune response in the brain that leads to constant seizures, sometimes death, and very often, mental retardation and impaired cognitive function.
This condition is called FIRES: Febrile (fever) Induced Related Epilepsy Syndrome. Annalise is currently in her third week of a drug-induced coma to suppress the seizures, and this may take up to 6 weeks. She is starting a special diet via a feeding tube to cause a metaboic state called ketosis to help suppress seizures.
She is constantly attended by her devoted mother, father, who is a disabled vet (he served as Special Warfare Combantant-Craft Crewman..SWCC in the Navy ) and her 13 year old brother.
My husband, who has also served in the miitary, has practiced obstetrics and gynecology for 35 years, and I have been an operating room nurse for over 30 years. Neither of us has ever heard of this dreadful disease. Even though we are more than a thousand miles apart, we feel very close to this family. We enjoyed a visit with them last fall, and Annalise was as vibrant and beautiful as any 11 year old girl could possibly be.
It is absolutely heartbteaking and terrifying to see this helpless and innocent young girl stricken by such an insidious and devasting disease.
Any financial help received will be applied to her soaring hospital bills and rehabilitation.
