Animal Hats for Refugee Children

$15,381 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 113 people in 21 months

March 2016 our lives were changed.
That was when my husband Andre and I   began meeting the 1000 unaccompanied child refugees in Calais, France.  We volunteered at The Jungle refugee camp. 1000 children.    Ages  8-18.......alone.

God laughed at our plans this year and changed them!  We were going to northern Greece to a refugee camp called  Veria.  Now, we are going to  volunteer with refugees in  Camp Moria, in Lesvos , Greece,  with the non-profit "One Happy Family", for the month of February.  Then Serbia, on the Serbia/Croatia border for three weeks in  March with the non-profit "BelgrAid".

The refugees need EVERYTHING! Donations will allow us to buy coats, shoes, socks, diapers, food, and so much more.

Our tickets to Athens and volunteer housing has been generously covered by two friends.
Andre and I will cover all our other expenses to volunteer.  100% of every  dollar we receive  here will go directly to refugees' desperate needs.
With each  donation made, Andre and I will then donate a warm,  animal hat that we ( along with family,  friends and 4 churches ) have made, to  a refugee child. (see video above)

Our goal is 300 HATS for refugee kids!
See photo at end of articel.......WE did it!!!

With these generous donations,  we will purchase the most desperately  needed items,  locally.   This  helps the local economy and  alleviates  shipping costs.

65 million refugees, seems impossible to deal with. How do we help?  Listen....read, share their stories. Volunteer.  Donate.  Pray.
Even though the world seems dark right now, always remember, each of us , banded together, can be the light!  How do we help 65 million refugees?  One at a time.  We can do this.  Love wins!

                                         THANK YOU!
             joan and andre

(300 handmade, knitted hats with fun animals on them are now packed in 3 duffle bags  and will be given out to refugee children in Camp Moria.)  Can't wait to see the smiles!

Dear Anonymous , thank you so much for putting us over the top of our goal!!!! You are so kind to do this, helping refugees who are some of the best people I know, living in the worst conditions. Andre and I have only 2 days left working in Lesvos, then we pack up and fly to Serbia. We have heard , as bad as it is here, that Serbia is worse.
Hope this note finds you enjoying life and your family and hoping maybe our paths will cross again someday! Sending a big big hug,
Much love,

Dear Venice , Florida Women's Sailing Squadron,

I am sitting here after a long day after working with the refugees, and I looked on my email messages, and saw a donation from your group. My heart is touched! You brought JOY to many women with your jewelry you sent. Faces lit up, eyes sparkled while women and young girls with pierced ears picked out a pair of earrings. Camp Moria is beyond horrible, they call it HELL. The women wear diapers at night because it is too dangerous to go out to the bathroom. People are honestly living on top of each other. No dignity, no showers, no toilet paper. No soap.....so earrings make women feel feminine again! THANK YOU for the earrings, and now this generous donation. Last night we gave some of the donation money to a restaurant that feeds refugees for free, 7 nights a week. This Greek family are my heroes. You can check out their story ....called "Home for a Day", Lesvos, Greece. Thank you for helping us to make a difference in refugees lives. All the best, Joan and Andre

Thank you Anonymous friend for this generous donation of $300 ! What a surprise, as we were taking off for Greece, to get that notice from GoFundMe . What a send off ! So special to get this from an old pal, and what a blessing to the refugees it will help. Well, we made it to Athens! Two days of flying and travel and we are exhausted, but happy we are here! We will rest and see a tiny bit of Greece till Sunday, when we fly one more time , to Lesvos and begin our volunteering. Thank you for being such a big part of this! much love, Joan
