Alicia's College Incidentals Funds

Donation protected
This fundraising campaign is intended to provide an extraordinary individual with some modest additional funds to support necessary expenses that not covered by the full 4-year scholarship she has been awarded to Maine’s prestigious Bowdoin College, a scholarship she earned by virtue of her intelligence, drive and potential.

Alicia Rosanna has known since she was very young that she wants to study astrophysics, and has displayed the acumen and drive to make her dream come true. She came to the US alone, from Cape Verde when she was only 15.

She left behind her parents and moved in with her grandmother in a rooming house. She enrolled at Jeremiah Burke High School in Boston, a “level 4” school (a Massachusetts designation for the most troubled of public schools).  There, the school faculty and support staff quickly discovered her seemingly unlimited academic and personal potential. Learning English only upon her arrival, after two years Alicia graduated second in her class at the age of 17.

She received a full scholarship to do a postgraduate year at Williston Northampton, a prestigious prep school in Western Massachusetts. There she again excelled to gain admission and a full 4-year scholarship to Bowdoin where she matriculates next week!

Unfortunately, Alicia's family is not in a position to support her quest for higher education. So, in addition to the financial, linguistic and emotional challenges of coming to this country, Alicia has had to rely on the good graces of former faculty and support staff at her high school, and their extended social network.

A small group of supporters has begun to build a fund to pay expenses not completely covered by Bowdoin - such things as a laptop, personal sundries, transportation to and from Maine, winter clothes and boots.  The most immediate needs are a laptop and dorm room setup.

For many of us, the fundamental question is doesn't this extraordinary young woman deserve all the benefits we afforded our own children when they went off to college?

We hope you might join us with any gift, small or large. Whatever we raise will be kept to keep her going in college until she is in a position to earn her own pocket money in work study or summer jobs.

Even just a small gift will help Alicia to continue her climb from poverty to - quite literally - the stars.
