THANK YOU to those of you who have helped so far and to those of you willing to help going forward.  Together, I pray we are able to continue to provide the support Val and her family so urgently need.

Alex Gomez is a wonderful 40-year young man that means so much to so many: husband to Val, father to 3-year-old Evangeline (Ev), and son-in-law to Ruthana (Nana) to name a few.

Months ago, Alex was complaining of headaches.  Doctors soon discovered his brain cancer. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 Brain Cancer (Glioblastoma) in August of 2016.  Although Alex has undergone a major surgery to remove 85% of the tumor, it wasn’t enough. Radiation was started as soon as possible; however, he has received his lifetime amount. Chemo was begun, and it did nothing. They have tried everything and none of the treatments have worked. The doctors have said there is nothing more they can do. Meanwhile, the tumor continues to grow. Alex now has severe short-term memory loss and, sadly, his long term memory is rapidly waning. His prognosis is terminal and he likely has less than 3-6 months to live.  At this stage, Alex is incapable of taking care of himself and has to have a responsible adult with him 24/7, for safety issue.

This sweet family is desperate.  Thus far, we are volunteering to provide afternoon/evening "sitting” so that Alex is not left unattended. Unfortunately, “sitting” is not considered “nursing care” and only “nursing care” is covered by Val’s insurance at this time. Val is the sole supporter for her family.  It cost $320.00 for 16 hours of daytime service and $176.00 for 8 hours of night sitting, which she cannot afford.  She is currently spending $528 for three nights/week. Regretfully, these 3 nights are the only time she gets adequate rest.  She must have help!

Please, I implore you, reach into your hearts (and your wallets) to help our fellow in any way, be it “sitting,” a meal through the meal train or a financial donation to offset medical costs.

We all know what it's like to be sleep deprived. Can you imagine being sleep deprived and giving 24/7 care to a terminally ill husband and being Mommy a 3 1/2-year-old daughter, who needs her mother, now more than ever?!

Your donations will aid in offsetting the ever growing medical costs.  It will also provide some much needed relief to Val by paying for Nurse Aide and/or Nursing costs ($22.00 per hour (for Night Shift for 8 hours a night) X 7 days a week X 20 weeks = $24,640.00).  Please know that a financial gift in any increment is greatly appreciated.

My husband and I are starting this off with a gift of “10 Times Chai” (see below to understand Chia), $180.00 each as a gift to honor Alex at this time and also a gift of life for Val, Ev and Ruthana.  My prayer is that you will follow suit, however, any donation in an increment of $18.00 will be greatly appreciated.  Any donation will all add up to be of assistance to this sweet family in this horrific situation.

In Judaism, what does "Chai" mean?
The word "chai' translated from Hebrew to English means "life." Within the Jewish faith, the word "chai" possesses both numerical and symbolic meaning. The Hebrew word consists of two (2) letters in the alphabet: Chet (ח) and Yud (י). Together these letters form "chai" which signifies life and represents being alive.

The Numerical Significance of Chai
In Judaism, the word "chai" is numerically significant and the number 18 is universally synonymous with this word. Numerically, the words consists of the eighth (8th) and tenth (10th) letters of the Hebrew alphabet Chet (ח) and Yud (י), adding up to eighteen the number 18, which is also the word "Chai”.There is a deep connection drawn upon the word 'chai', its meaning 'life' and the numerical value of the letters that comprise this word.

 Gifts of "Chai" ("$18")
In Judaism, it is common to give and receive gifts in multiples of $18 or "Chai", which in part signifies a good omen for life. In fact, the longstanding Jewish tradition of gifting, contributing or donating in increments of $18 to individuals is often considered a good deed and mitzvah. Generally, these gifting rituals take place in connection with the celebration, honoring or remembrance of loved ones. This custom is also common during all life-cycle events, including rites of passage, and any Jewish occasion from birth announcements and weddings to expressing condolences. The act of giving, gifting or donating $18 or multiples thereof is commonly referred to as "giving chai." This nomenclature extends to multiples as the number 36 is commonly referred to as "double Chai". Symbolically, these gestures are representative of giving a gift of 'life".
