Ahimsa Sanctuary Farm :  Sharing the Dream of Sustainability

Ahimsa Sanctuary Farm is a lush 25 acre farm on the north shore of the island of Maui, devoted to sustainable, healthy living and education about permaculture, aquaculture, renewable energy and more.

Our approach to regenerative farming is based upon observation of natural ecosystems. Using a permaculture approach to farming and land management, the farm is designed using whole systems to grow healthy plants and to enhance the life force of the land.  A grid-tied wind and solar power installation helps meet the  farm's energy needs.

We strive to grow plant-based soil amendments on-site, adjacent to our vegetable and herb gardens and fruit orchards. We also source mulch and other local organic nutrients from the island. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used.  Aquaculture ponds supply nutrient rich water via gravity fed irrigation.  Depleted soils are being regenerated naturally with composting, vermaculture, re-mineralization, mycorrhizal fungi, and planting cover crops such as buckwheat and sun hemp. Biochar, Biodynamic preparations, and Korean Natural Farming methods are also being used to build life in the soil. The farm has been organically managed in this fashion for over 10 years and received formal organic certification by International Certification Services Inc. in 2016.

To date we have sold fruit, vegetables, and herbs to local restaurants, health food stores, wholesale distributors and at farmers markets. We also grow assorted flowers including red, pink, and torch ginger, and many varieties of heliconia, as well as sugar cane and bamboo. The labor and production costs of organic farming
make it difficult to break even on these produce sales.

We have begun making value added products from our produce, and have developed a Soothing Herbal Tea Blend containing herbs organically grown on our farm. Our recently acquired stainless steel and glass distillation unit will allow us to produce a variety of hydrosols and essential oils.  Demonstrating how essential oils are distilled will raise visitors’ awareness of the variety and power of healing plants. We just completed harvesting two thousand pounds of turmeric, and have a large mainland order for turmeric hydrosol as well as another account for dried sliced turmeric.

The farm provides a perfect setting for teaching visitors about sustainability and for instilling reverence and respect for the earth as a Divine Mother worthy of protection.  Through an interfaith ministry called Sacred Earth Assembly, we wish to bring the community together for holiday celebrations, rites of passage, divinely inspired creative self-expression through the arts, and sharing locally grown healthy food. Recognizing that we all share the same Earth Mother is a great unifier, reminding us that we are part of the sacred web of life, making all beings our relatives.
In order for the existing temple building to be approved for occupancy as a church, a significant increase in fire protection is required by the County.  This will entail building a large reservoir feeding two fire hydrants.  To be able to offer prepared food and other value added agricultural products to the public, a new building is needed to house a certified commercial kitchen.   Your donations will open the way and allow this worthwhile project to inspire more people to adopt a sustainable lifestyle and to connect with an inclusive, Earth-based spirituality. Thank you for your help! We are all in and have laid a sound foundation.  The orchards and gardens are planted and Sacred Earth Temple is built! Now, with your support, this dream will be taken to the next level of manifestation.

We feel blessed to have been able to bring the vision to this point, and now with Faith and Trust we open to the flow of support from the Universe.  Any amount of help is valued and appreciated with deep gratitude!

Thank you for sharing our video with your friends and social media networks.

Aloha! We are off to a good start on our fund raising campaign thanks to your support! Now it would be super helpful for the campaign to be shared throughout your social media networks. Any size donation will help - the key is to get more people aware of what we are doing and the important facets of the vision that remain to be funded. Thank you for bringing our project to the attention of friends and acquaintances who recognize the importance of demonstrating natural, non-polluting ways to grow food and produce energy, and the value of bringing the community together to honor our Mother Earth. Celebration of the gift of life in reverence and gratitude is a great way to affirm an earth-based spirituality that can unite all people. Thank you for your continued help!

Our campaign is launched and a key question has arisen for some; Why is it important to have the temple building approved by the County for church use? The reason is that on agriculturally zoned land, only agricultural activities are allowed. A Special Use Permit (SUP) is required for church related activities like gathering in groups for prayer, education, and celebration. The word "church" here refers to any religious or spiritual not-for-profit group. In our case, it refers to Sacred Earth Assembly, an interfaith ministry welcoming all people to gather in gratitude to celebrate the gift of life provided by our Earth Mother. Sharing the same mother makes us all related to the web of life. We see human beings as stewards of that sacred web for future generations so they will inherit clean water, fresh air, living soils that will feed the children.
We welcome and appreciate your support!
