What would you do to save your fathers life? Is there anything you would not do? If you could take the suffering of a loved one in pain, would you? I'd like to start this with saying, We are just like you. We have felt the pain of a loved one dying of Cancer. We have felt the struggle in taking care of someone who is ill. But, we never once thought it would come a time in our lives where our hearts feel like its being strangled. Our own father fighting for his life  when sometimes it feels as if there is no hope.  Our names are Roger Kelley, Katie Kelley, and Megan Kelley. We have had an awesome life, have an amazing family, and at this very moment in time are losing one of the greatest men we have ever known.

Our father, Roger Kelley Sr. is in the fight of his life with NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis); and while still maintaining the strong paternal instincts he has always held, is being slowly consumed by the sickness inside him.  The doctors have given him from 3-5 months to live, if not for a critical liver transplant. These donations we seek are to help pay for the astronomic insurance costs, the transplant operation itself and all other costs since dad has lost his job. We understand that it is never easy to give what you simply do not have, but it is as equally hard asking friends, family, and strangers to help save my fathers life. Looking back on the life he gave us, we would often think of him as invincible, so strong and caring; but seeing him weaken and become so frail is something we have a hard time contemplating as a reality. Time is of the essence, and if he does not get a transplant soon he will unfortunantly be fighting a losing battle with a failing liver.

Words cannot be written to express the gratitude we have for all of you amazing people reading this, and there is no way that we could ever repay you or show you the thanks you all deserve. I hope knowing that you've helped a man see his first grandchild, enjoy another moment with his wife of thirty-two years, and spend another christmas with his three children give you all a warmth in your heart. We are thankful in more ways than you could ever imagine.

Update on pops: Sorry it has been awhile since we last updated everyone but we have been on a rollercoaster of events and emotions. Dad has had a lot of ups and downs the past few months and is currently back at Loyola. The pattern seems to be a week at Loyola and then discharged to RML where he spends about 5 days and then is sent back to ICU at Loyola for about 3 days and then sent to the 5th floor and then discharged back to RML where insurance denies him for a few days and then the doctors at Loyola call the panel of doctors at Blue Cross Blue Sheild (who have never seen him but make judgements off of charts and deny him basic care) and they convince him that RML is the best place to help him improve rather than sending him to a basic nursing home where it is cheaper and no progression happens. We are all reliving the same events week after week while dad continues to fight like hell. After having a transplant you are on drugs that suppress the immune system so every little thing causes a major infection. Obviously being in the hospital for so long makes dad the perfect candidate for infections and his body can't fight them off on his own. Dad has experienced a stage 4 bed sore, sepsis, chest infection, C-Diff and recently had his stomach and chest pumped because he aspirated.  He can't catch a break but with the help of the amazing team at Loyola, the relentless dedication love and support from mom and the best addition to the family  (RDKIII little Rog) that gives dad a bigger reason to fight, we are hoping that one day dad will be able to come home to us. We are 9 months in since dad's transplant and have witnessed the pure strength of one of the strongest men we know and as long as he keeps fighting we will keep fighting on his behalf. Thank you to those who have continued to support each of us through the hardest 9 months of our lives. Thank you to those who have made an effort to support mom while she is missing her best friend and has no one else to turn to. Thank you to those who have picked her up and spent time with her just to let her cry on someone else's shoulder for once and thank you to those who have been there to show dad that he still has a team fighting for him. I know life gets in the way but thank you to each and every one of you who have been there for our family. We will never forget who showed up during the hard times. Love, The Kelley Family

Update on pops April 3, 2017: Yesterday dad had a very bad day. He was rushed to Hinsdale Hospital ER to stabilize him after he had become dangerously unresponsive. When he was stabalized there they were able to drive him to Loyola where he is getting the best care from his team of doctors. He is not stable enough to withstand most of the tests they need to do at the moment but he is fighting like hell. One thing confirmed now is he is suffering from septic shock. They have cooling blankets to bring his fever down which is at 106 right now, blood pressure medication to bring that up which is at 84/48 and medications to slow his breathing and assist the ventilator since his heart is at 156. So far he isn't responding to anything but we know he has a lot of fight left in him. Please say some extra prayers as the next 24 to 48 hours are critical

Update on pops April 5, 2017: Dad opened his eyes and smiled today:) his HR is 98 BP 116/61 Temp 100.7 and he's starting to respond to his meds. He will have to go into surgery at some point today and put a drain is his side and remove stones from his bile duct which is effecting the liver and blood stream as well. They are also still treating C-Diff, stage 4 bedsore (not due to negligence but due to skin tears from liver disease that he has had since the 1st day in the hospital and with having no immune system it is impossible to stop from starting and spreading ) septic shock and waiting for neurology to have results. They are saying now that they believe he is not suffering from seizures but trying to pinpoint what they are and what's causing the body to respond that way. He is extremely sick and has a lot of things stacked against him but he is fighting each and every day to make it back to us. We can't thank each of you enough for your continued prayers, well wishes and positive vibes being sent our way. Love you all.

Update on pops: After a very scary couple of weeks, dad was moved from the 5th floor at Loyola to the 3rd floor MICU and finally back to the original 4th floor ICU. After an intense cocktail of antibiotics, dad's fever came down, his bp is perfect, his heart rate came down from a constant 170 and he was able to beat pneumonia. Since this past Friday, dad has been making continual progress. He is awake, aware, able to smile, laugh, nod yes and no, and fully track with his eyes. Yesterday we put the voice box on his trach and we finally heard his voice for the first time in just over four months. He is having trouble adjusting to talking through a trach but he was able to respond to Katie by saying "Love you too". If we have learned anything these past four months, it is that dad is the strongest man we know. He's kicking ass and taking names and finally making it back to us. His team and insurance cleared him to be moved tomorrow to RML in Hinsdale where he will have 24 hour care and rehabilitation. He has a very long road ahead of him but he will beat this! Thank you for your continued prayers, positive vibes, well wishes and support. We love you all!

Update on pops: Even though dad is back in ICU at Loyola, he is kicking ass. Since Thursday dad has been continuously tracking with his eyes, shaking his head yes and no, smiling and even crying and showing emotions. The last four days have been the best we have seen since September. All test results for infection have come back negative, the blood clot is under control, his vitals are perfect, he made it through the bile duct procedure with flying colors and his liver and kidney are still working perfectly. His mental status has improved compared to what he has been and we truly believe this is the start of him coming back to us. We know there is still a very long road ahead of dad and there will be a lot of bumps but we know he will make it through. The last four months have been some of the most trying times for our family and we would not have been able to get through it without the love and support of our dearest friends, family and even strangers who have become friends and family! Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts and thank those who have taken countless hours away from your own families to be at the hospital with ours. You each make the days a lot more bearable.
