Petunia's Surgery

Donation protected
Petunia was found on the side of the road in a small Texas town.  Someone had shot her in the leg.  It wasn’t because she is mean or aggressive.  No, that’s how you would describe the person that shot her.  Petunia, on the other hand, is one of the sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet.  Even on that day, hopping helplessly on three legs with shards of bullet and bone in her left hind leg, her tail wagged and her eyes smiled as she was rescued by Lytle Animal Control.  They have an amazing facility staffed by wonderful people, but they were full to capacity and couldn’t handle a dog with a gunshot wound.  They didn’t want to have to put her to sleep so they called us.

Kayser Animal Rescue Effort was founded by a veterinarian and her husband and to date we have rescued and rehomed almost 100 dogs and cats.  And because we have a veterinarian caring for our rescues 24 hours a day, we can take more medically demanding cases like Petunia.  We gladly opened our home to her after we got the call from Animal Control.  The precious girl that we heard about over the phone was even more fetching when we finally met her.  We have a soft spot in our hearts for pit bulls (she’s our ninth!), who are often “underdogs” in the rescue world, and we immediately fell in love with her.

We took x-rays and what used to be her tibia was now just an absolute mess.  Some fractures can heal with time, but this one needed major surgical intervention to get the leg back to where Petunia would have the quality of life that she deserves.  She’s a bouncy, active, playful, friendly girl, young (only a year old) and a big solid girl at 50 lbs, so having four good legs to run around on is far preferable to losing a leg we could save.  We can handle a lot of medical procedures ourselves, such as spays and neuters, dental work, and basic bone fractures.  However, Petunia required an orthopedic surgical specialist to put the metal plate into her leg and this more expensive surgery is what we need help paying for.

The final cost of the surgery was $1700.  We have already had an incredibly generous $500 donation from one of our donors, so now we only need $1200.  Every dollar donated towards this goal is a dollar that we can instead put towards other important aspects of our rescue program.  It’s preventative vaccines, life-saving medications, heartworm testing and treatments, spays and neuters, and massive amounts of dog food!  It allows us to continue to help dogs in need like Petunia, who throughout this entire process (numerous bandage changes, constantly having to wear the dreaded “cone”, crate confinement and nothing but leashed walks) has never stopped being an enthusiastic, loving, and playful girl.  We can’t wait to see her running, jumping and playing like she was born to.

Thank you!
