Military Family Home Destroyed by Earthquake
On November 30, 2018 a 7.0 earthquake wreaked havoc on Alaskans in the Anchorage area. For us, it took away our home where we planned to raise our children after my husband’s military service.
It has been 6 months now after the earthquake. We still have not found any funding. I can easily say we have made hundreds of phone calls, emails, and letters looking for help. We have been turned down by FEMA, Alaska Individual Disaster Assistance, Red Cross, Army Emergency Relief Fund, and numerous small charities that we have reached out to. The reason why we do not qualify for federal assistance is because our home was not our primary residence at the time of the earthquake. We are a military family stationed out-of-state. This is the ONLY home we owned and planned to live permanently. We had the home rented because there is no other way for a military member to maintain homeownership when constantly being ordered to work and live elsewhere. We may be stationed in North Carolina but we still suffered a great loss in Alaska and our future.
We currently still have $285, 000 left on our mortgage. The house is completely destroyed and a new home would need to be built. Since there is no federal funding we can not afford to keep the property. However we still need help finding assistance in the demolition of the home. I have changed our previous goal of $288,000 for our mortgage payments to $35,000 for the estimated cost for demolition. I want to thank all those who have donated so far.
