ADA Camp Carefree

American Diabetes Association (ADA) Camp Carefree is a vibrant residential camp for children with diabetes. We emphasize creating a warm atmosphere of care and cooperation; providing a fun-filled, educational experience; and helping campers to develop and maintain active, healthy lifestyles. The two-week camp is designed for 120 campers, between six and eight counselors-in-training (CITs), and 24 counselors, providing a ratio of one counselor for every five campers. Each year we rely on donations for 1) scholarships which enable many campers to attend and 2) funds to run the camp itself.
Currently we are asking help for:
8 Mini Refrigerators
One for each cabin. These refrigerators keep necessary supplies for low blood sugar treatment and other emergencies available and cold. This is especially important since a camper could have a low blood sugar at any time. These replacement refrigerators will allow for adequate storage to help keep the 15 campers, three counselors and one CIT in each cabin safe, especially overnight.
Camper Sponsorships
The family expense per child is $1,300 for a 2 week session. This, however, is only half of the true cost to send a child to camp. The American Diabetes Association pays half of the actual cost for every camper. Your sponsorship donation is essential and will help a child that otherwise would financially be unable to attend camp.
ADA Camp Carefree gives children with this disease an outlet to embrace their life-long challenge as opposed to hiding or being embarrassed by it. It provides a strong support system that campers take with them away from camp itself and well into the year. Most importantly, the camp experience teaches them that a normal, healthy, active life with diabetes is completely realistic and achievable.
