My lifelong friend, Caroline Martinez-Henderson and her family are in the midst of a life changing emergency:
On June 28th in the morning while at work, Craig felt a sharp pain in his back and was in excruciating pain. This went on until Friday morning at 2:30 am when he started convulsing and blacked out several times. Caroline and the kids called 911 and stayed with him while paramedics arrived. They were unable to get an IV in and had to drill a hole in his knee bone to be able to get fluids in him, they also had to shock his heart twice all while he was awake. Once the EMT got him stable they took him to the hospital where the doctor concluded he had had a massive heart attack Wednesday morning. His heart and heart wall had been dying for 2 days and was only functioning at 10%. It was a miracle he was alive. Life flight picked him up to take him to Houston but while in the air he coded but the life flight crew was able to bring him back after 5 minutes.
Once in Houston they were able to stabilize him and saw that his main artery was 100% blocked along with 3 others that were blocked. They put him on a tandem heart and ventilator to take the stress off of his heart to let it recover allowing his heart function to go from 10% to now 30%! The doctors are more worried about his brain function now because he hasn’t woken up and they don’t know if his brain received oxygen for those 5 minutes in life flight. He will need a heart transplant but has not been put on the list yet due to his current condition.
Due to the severity of the circumstances, Caroline is unable to return to work. The family is having to stay with family friends to be near Houston and now don’t have a source of income. This will be a very long journey for this family.
