Please Help Save Lives
Humanity Against Poverty has sponsored a campaign for drought victims in Somalia. Humanity Against Poverty is nonprofit registered in the State of Virginia.  http://humanityagainstpoverty.org

More than 6 million people are at the brink of losing their lives in Somalia due to drought and looming famine.

This drought named by Somalis as “Sima”, meaning  “The Leveler” has leveled and devastated people across Somalia. The drought has been in the making for the past three years. The likelihood it will become a disastrous full-blown famine is high.

Somalia is located in arid train where rainfall has always been unpredictable and sparse. There have been several famine crises in Somalia for the past 40 years. The famine of 2011 killed 250 thousand in its wake. This current one seems to be more severe than the last two in record.

The drought conditions have increased the spread of epidemic diseases such as acute watery diarrhea, cholera, and measles. Reports form UN and humanitarian agencies indicate that the first 7 weeks of 2017, over 6, 000 cases and over 65 deaths by acute watery diarrhea/ cholera have been reported, and a total of 2578 cases of suspected measles were reported as of September 2016.

Over 6 million are in need of food water and medicine; affected population is on the move trying to find food and water. People are dying by the hundreds on a daily basis

365 thousand children are in need of urgent food.

Humanity Against Poverty is responsible for the funds. HAP will manage it to make sure all funds reach the victims. Humanity Against Poverty  http://humanityagainstpoverty.org is non profit orgnization that works on poverty issues.

There will be no third party recipient. All funds will be used directly to save the lives of drought victims. Funds will be dispersed to the hardest hit area where most deaths have been reported. Funds will be used to set up various camps where drought victims can reach/ or have already gathered, funds will buy supplies inside Somalia. Supplies will include rice, water, oil, milk and nutritious biscuits as well as medicine. Victims will be supplied with food, water and medicine.

Together we can help bring normalcy to the lives of people impacted by this drought.

Most Somalis are pastoralist’s nomads. Nomads move around a lot. The move around to find pasture (water and grass) for their livestock. A livestock may consist of sheep, goats and camels. The wealth of a family is measured through their animals. When a family moves, they load up their camels with all their belongings. Their belongs may only consist of the hut, made out of quilt like material and very meager food stuffs like flour, grains and oil. Once the camel is uploaded, the family walks for hours, sometimes days to locate the perfect spot to settle. Children walk along with the rest of the family and may sometimes be given tasks like looking after the small animals. These trips are tiring and the family may not eat for days. But you will never find anyone complaining. Once a pot to settle is located, the women construct the hut and make fire for food. They may also milk the animals for milk. The family settles for the day and may stay in that homestead for a while, before they are on the move again. Somalia’s inconsistent rain fail necessities the frequent move. The land is often arid and become unlivable.

I am Fadumo

I walked with the children to a food station

Two fell ill

They haven’t had food for five days

Ahmed was the weakest

Amina carried the only pot w own

We always carry our pots and plastic containers

That is where we put the food and water

They are empty now

Before we made it to the food station

Two of the kids couldn’t walk any more

We had to leave them

We came back the next day

They were not there
