Melissa's Boys' Education

Donation protected
Melissa, who died on Saturday, 16th January 2016 aged 28 years, was the mother of three boys who are two, four and nine years of age. They are beautiful children who should have bright futures ahead of them.

Melissa died from breast cancer after an 18 month long courageous battle. She passed away at 20:18 on Saturday, 16th January 2016 in The North London Hospice, 47 Woodside Avenue, London N12 8TT (telephone number 0208 [phone redacted], email: [email redacted].uk) where Melissa was looked after by the most caring and dedicated staff one could imagine! We are all so gratefull for all they did for Melissa.

Melissa was determined to live, right up to her passing away, even when she knew the odds were so highly stacked against her. Melissa was a fighter and fought her illness all of the way!

Melissa lived for her boys. She worked for the NHS at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London as a Maternity Support Worker helping to bring babies into the world and did so, on many occasions, until her illness, sadly, and to her huge regret, latterly caused her to be unable to continue to do so. Melissa's colleagues describe her as an outstanding  practitioner. She will be so sorely missed by them and the families she so tenderly cared for.

Melissa always gave her boys the best she could - love, her life experience and above all, her love of interacting with them - she always found time to spend chatting, playing and being with them, as all Mums do. Melissa's boys are going to miss this in a way that most of us could not have possibly contemplated when we were their age. They were her absolute priority. They returned their Mum's love unconditionally!

I am the husband of Melissa's supervisor and friend. Melissa wanted the best for her three boys, so we have decided that we would like to create a Trust Fund to cater for the boys' future educational requirements. The two older boys' Head Teacher will be one of three Trustees along with the Boys' Godmother, for which we are most grateful. I will be the third Trustee as a solicitor (please visit the Law Society website for verification of my professional status).

We will create a Discretionary Trust to manage all funds we receive that will be used wholly to pay for the boys' future educational expenses - school outings,  school field trips, exam fees, equipment, further education or apprenticeship costs, and university fees (wouldn't that be something that would make Melissa so proud?) without the boys or their family worrying about costs.

The Trustees will not be paid and will not claim any expenses so that all money raised will be for the benefit of the boys.

Most people of Melissa's age do not plan their own funeral and, with Melissa not having been able to work for so long since her illness took hold and coupled with her savings being depleted, we feel that the creation of an Educational Trust will assist with her boys' future educational expenses.  All money raised will be dedicated solely to the education of the boys.

The sooner the Trust receives any funds, the sooner interest will accrue. We hope that the £25,000 we wish to raise will build over the years, to a fund that will pay all of their expected educational costs including university fees. The youngest boy is two years of age so we have nineteen years for the fund to accumulate to pay for him to enroll and graduate from university. This is a long haul project and one to which we are all committed

It is not often that we have an opportunity to help others in their hour of need in such a tactile way, although we all wish that Melissa was still with us to take care of her children's needs herself. Alas, this was not to be, so we wish to slip into Melissa's shoes, just a little bit, to help realise her dreams for her boys. We feel that Melissa's children need all the help that they can get, especially with their very uncertain and fragile future.

We know that the boys will be grateful, when they are older, for the kind assistance you will be giving in offering them a helping hand and a solid start to their lives. Nothing can replace their Mum but we can all make their futures a little more secure - something that all mothers aspire to!

Thank you all so much for reading this and we hope that you will be able to contribute, however modest -  small acorns grow into big oak trees!!!!
