Kenmore All-America City Award Finals!

Donation protected
The Kenmore Village Improvement Society (KVIS) earlier this year submitted an application for Kenmore to receive an All-America City Award. KVIS worked hard to create a compelling application that vividly portrays the quantity and excellent quality of civic engagement here in Kenmore.   Our application was based on three civic ventures -the KVIS, the Citizen Science Community Resources/Clean Air Coalition of WNY, and the Ken-Ton Closet.  In April we received word that Kenmore is one of 25 finalists for the 2014 Awards!! The National Civic League All-America City Award is the country's most prestigious award for outstanding, community-based civic accomplishments. Just being selected to be a finalist is a great honor considering the many wonderful communities that apply each year.

The National Civic League recognizes ten communities each year for outstanding civic accomplishments. To win, each community must demonstrate innovation, inclusiveness, civic engagement, and cross sector collaboration by describing successful efforts to address pressing local challenges. The award competition is open to neighborhoods, towns, cities, counties and metropolitan regions. In their applications, All-America City (AAC) finalists briefly tell their community stories, list two of their most pressing challenges and three outstanding community projects. The award program culminates in a three-day event where community delegations tell their stories of successful change to a national jury of business, nonprofit, and local government experts. All-America Cities benefit by increasing community pride, networking with civic activists from across the country and gaining national recognition. The AAC designation has helped communities win grants and new resources and attract new employers; once a community has won the AAC designation they have it forever.

There are twenty four other fine communities throughout the United States that have demonstrated their progressive civic nature and have been chosen as finalists -so we know that obtaining the Award will be difficult -but we're optimistic about our chances!  We're looking forward to preparing for the challenge and are honored to be selected as finalists. This challenge includes sending a team of Kenmore representatives to the All-America City Finals held in Denver, CO on June 13-15. During that time our community will be evaluated by the judges and up to ten winnering communities announced on the 15th.

As you can imagine, the cost of sending a team of people from Kenmore to Denver to the AAC Finals is great. The National Civic League expects each community selected to be finalists to raise the funds needed to attend.  Please, will you give any amount to help cover airfare, lodging, presentation materials, etc. for 16 people to go to the Finals to represent Kenmore?  The average number of people who go to the Finals from each community is 30.

If you are a person who believes in your Kenmore community and want to help out where you're able, please donate any amount. Thank you!  You will receive an invitation to the Kenmore Award Celebration should we win the Award.  We'll use our various media outlets to let folks know you donated too if you like.

With your assistance we can help the whole United States to know that our community is a place filled with people in business, government, and residents who proactively embrace our identity as a great American place of excellence and care.  Please share this page and information with others.   Thank you!
