Help Restore Seward/Mapes Homestead

Donation protected
The Seward/Mapes Homestead presents a rare opportunity in historic preservation to focus on nineteenth century American history, as well as the lives and accomplishments of two men deeply engaged in the American Civil War on different levels – one as Secretary of State in the Lincoln Administration and the other as a Union soldier in an illustrious New York volunteer regiment that fought in many horrific battles from Manassas Gap to Appomattox. It also speaks to history in the western part of Orange County, New York.

In 2010, a group of citizens from the Village of Florida, New York, formed an organization to restore the property that includes the remnants of the William Henry Seward birthplace and the magnificent Queen Anne Style Victorian that was the family home of Captain William E. Mapes. It is the organization’s goal to restore the buildings, which had fallen into disrepair, and build the foundation of a community center, history center and museum. Recently designated a national historic landmark, we have New York State matching grants to measure up to.

We have accomplished a lot, but still have a very long way to go to meet our goal. As you can appreciate, for a number of reasons, historic preservation isn’t a large priority to most people. That is why we are reaching out to people like you. You understand the value of our efforts and support our goal of keeping history alive and engaging.

Thank you!
