Siletz Valley Grange Roof Replaceme

Donation protected
My name is Michelle Schaffer.  I am the current Master of the Siletz Valley Grange, located in Siletz, Oregon, a small community east of Newport, Oregon.

Our Grange Hall is in the middle of town located on Hwy 229, at the corner of Gaither and Metcalf Streets.  It serves our community as a meeting place for weekly Bingo's, Saturday Sales, Saturday Markets, meeting place for non-profits, school groups, church organizations, family reunions, weddings, funerals and birthday parties.

Our roof has been in place since the 1940's when the block building replaced a wood building that was lost due to fire.  The roof is a unique material:  metal shingles that slide in to runners.  The roof has been leaking for years and small fixes have held it together.  This last December the roof began blowing off and a local contractor nailed it back down with roofing paper...a short term fix.

I wrote a grant to the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, Charitable Trust for approximately $25,000 and received $15,000 in February of this year.

We are holding an Indian Taco Feed and Silent Auction of March 12th at the Siletz Valley Grange Hall from 5-7 pm to raise matching grant monies.  I will then go and apply to other organizations in hopes of raising the remaining $10,000 needed.   Replacing the roof is the first step in making additional repairs, such as replacing the gutters, cleaning the concrete block, sealing it and painting it both inside and out.  The block is beyond it's 40 years of life so we are working hard to preserve it.  I have received $8,000 towards the $12,000 needed for the new gas furnace and sealing/painting the block building.

My hope is to have this roof replaced as soon as possible before more of it starts blowing off in our coastal storms.  The water damage inside is of immediate concern.

I am passionate about this building.  I have been on the board of the Siletz Valley Partnership (Drug and Alcohol Prevention) for 26 years and have used this building for many classes, fundraisers, art shows, carnivals, public meetings, cub scouts, 4H, my brothers wedding and my father-in-laws memorial service.  It is a staple to our community.  Seeing this roof replaced has been my goal for years.  I pray you can help make it a reality.
