Mr. Herb Griffin is a U.S. Army World War II veteran and Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient for his injuries and actions in June of 1944. Mr. Griffin was a part of the second wave landing at Utah Beach on 6 June 1944 traveling from England to France via boat to engage our enemies.
Mr. Griffin often stops by the firestation to visit us, and elaborate on some of his experiences as part of the "Greatest Generation" and the hell he endured in June of 1944. He humbly stated, he would do it all again (at a much younger age of course) to serve his country and ensure the freedoms of so many.
Mr. Griffin was discharged from the military and had a short career with Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department before completing a 30 plus year career with the U.S. Postal Service profession. He has been a lifelong resident of Jacksonville and Switzerland/ Fruit Cove Florida.
Mr. Griffin has stopped by the fire station several times and even brought some of his memorabilia to share with us over a cup of coffee and, in one visit, to partake in dinner with the crew. Mr. Griffin has expressed during these visits that he would like to return to France one day.
Through discussion with International Association of Fire Fighters Local 3865 (St. Johns County Professional Fire Fighters) we would like to send Mr. Griffin to France for the upcoming 70th anniversary of D-Day.
Mr. Griffin, whom is 88 years old and a widower of seven years, would like to have his brother, Ed travel with him on this journey. Ed is also an U.S. Army Veteran have served just a few short years following his brother. The total travel costs and guided tour for this proposal is $8463. St. Johns County Professional Firefighters have provided support for this cause both in financially and administratively.
