Stop blinding vehicle lights "Lightmare"

Our organisation "Lightmare" www.lightmare.org is formed to campaign against the escalating health and safety problem caused by the rise of blinding headlights, daytime running lights, tail and brake lights.

This light is blinding, dazzling, distracting causing pain and damage to the eyes of onlookers. They put the lives of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists at risk.

We ask that qualified, independent ophthalmologists be consulted by the authorities (UNECE and NHTSA) to determine both safe light levels and proper color spectrum and that the new standards be test-marketed across a wide sample of the population including those most at risk such as senior citizens, the visually impaired and migraine sufferers.

Light levels should not exceed:

Low beam headlights: maximum intensity 800candela (cd) max colour temp 3000K
Daytime running lights: maximum intensity 200candela (cd) max colour temp 3000K
Rear lights: maximum intensity 150candela (cd) colour red

We ask that existing vehicles that do not meet the new standards be retrofitted at the vehicle manufacturers expense and that all custom, after-market kits be banned.

Finally, we request that if there are any legitimate safety concerns that these newer products are trying to address that more reasonable measures be taken such as improved roadway lighting, enhanced crosswalks, pedestrian and cyclist safety awareness campaigns.

We need funds to get the message across and maybe a class action against the auto makers and legislators.
