Foxi - Rescued From a Kill Pen

Foxi is just 4 years old - a beautiful, gentle quarter horse mare who was most likely run through several auctions before she landed in the kill pen at Camelot in NJ, about to be shipped for slaughter in Canada.
In the photo of her that was circulated on Facebook she was still shiny and beautiful. I had previously rescued a slaughter-bound pony and my barn is already full, but I bought her anyway because the notion that such a young, healthy horse would be hauled for days with no food or water and then bruttally killed for meat was just over the top horrific.
But when I arrived at the kill pen to pick her up, Foxi looked nothing like the horse in the FB picture - she was emaciated, could barely stand up and was struggling to breathe. She was in such bad shape that even the feedlot employee looked on in disbelief when I loaded her onto the trailer.
I brought her back to VA and she's been in the ICU at a local vet hospital for the past 3 days. She was diagnosed with a severe pneumonia, a collapsed lung, advanced dehydration, and according to her vet she is now only between 2 and 3 on the body condition scale. She's still fighting for her life and while we've been able to make some headway in getting her well, her recovery is far from certain.
I was prepared to cover some additional veterinary expenses always to be anticipated when taking on a feedlot horse, but with the severity of Foxi's condition, her vet bills are rapidly going through the roof - we are quickly approaching the $5000.00 mark, and it's quite likely that they will climb even higher. Without knowing that adequate funds are available to cover her treatment, it will have to be reduced in scope and may not be sufficient to help her pull through.
