Real political reform - A Right to Housing - An Equal Ireland - Repeal the 8th - A Right to Water

Ireland is at a cross roads in regard to deciding what type of society and economy we want to pursue. Policies and politics have been dominated by free-market, light-touch regulation, neoliberal, approaches. It is time to change direction. It is time to put society and our people first and to make our goal the achieving of an equal Ireland - a true Republic of Equality.

This has resulted in a devastation of living standards in the recession and austerity – particularly the rise of child poverty, homelessness, mortgage arrears and emigration. A third of our children suffer material deprivation. Now in the ‘recovery’ we are left with multiple crises from housing to health care, childcare, precarious work, rising inequality and low pay and continued emigration.

On a personal level, I experience first-hand the reality of the many challenges in raising a young family in ‘recovery’ Ireland. From unaffordable childcare, mortgage costs, to health costs, water charges, even basic food – and then there is worrying about their future – how to afford college? Will they have to emigrate? Having three young children (7 mth old baby boy, 2 year old girl and 11 year old son) makes me think even more of the challenges faced by children growing up in poverty. How is it fair or right?

For over 15 years I have campaigned for a more equal society. I have been a community worker working in Dublin's inner city, a contract Lecturer in NUI Maynooth and am currently working as a Policy Analyst for the equality Think Tank, TASC.

During the period of austerity I have researched and articulated the negative impacts of austerity and proposed alternatives. In particular I have researched the housing crisis and highlighted the necessary policies  that are required to provide a right to housing. I have written and spoken extensively on the media (including The Irish Times, the Irish Examiner, Broadsheet.ie, The Vincent Browne Show, RTE) on issues such as the housing crisis, the right to water movement, equality and new political movements in Ireland. Recently I wrote and researched the Report on Low Pay, Decent Work and the Living Wage for the Oireachtas.

I support the Right 2 Change policy principles.

I believe that I have the expertise and passion to be an Independent Senator that will drive and campaign for real political reform, for the housing crisis to be addressed and for a more equal Ireland.

To run an effective campaign I need funding!

Thank you for any help you can provide!
