stamford - a family of four lost their home to fire tuesday evening after fire broke out in their two-story structure on campagna road in the village of stamford. stamford firefighters answered the call at around 8 p.m. and arrived to find flames coming from the home, owned by rose and charles mattice. “it was fully involved,” said stamford first assistant fire don vanetten. mutual aid was called to hobart, jefferson and grand gorge fire departments. the mattice’s son, nick, who was upstairs in the home was awakened by the smell of smoke. he had to exit a second story window onto a roof where he was able to jump to safety, according to stamford fire chief a.j. vamosy. their daughter, sarah, who had been in the garage helping her father, was able to free the family’s four dogs from their cages inside the home. while one of the dogs remained missing until late tuesday, it was later discovered near the home by firefighters and was safely reunited with the family. charles mattice was transported by ambulance to the hospital to be checked out, according to vamosy and one firefighter was treated at the scene for dehydration. vamosy said initially there was a problem getting water to the fire. “it’s a long driveway and it is very confined,” said vamosy. firefighters had to lay several hundred feet of hose to a hydrant near the entrance to the trailer park off river street. fire officials and investigators returned to the scene wednesday morning to determine the cause of the blaze, which was unknown at press time. vamosy said the american red cross was on the scene to assist the family and said the home is a total loss. an estimated 45 firefighters battled the blaze and the final crew left the scene around 1 a.m. wednesday. My husband and I lost our home to a fire just over a year ago. It's a devastating thing to go through. Friends and family (and complete strangers) helped us through. Best wishes to you.
