Study Abroad, University of Sussex England

Hello, my name is Fatimah Khan and I’m an undergraduate general biology major at the University of California San Diego. I was accepted into a competitive summer physics program at the University of Sussex England through UCEAP. This summer I hope to celebrate a new chapter in my life by travelling outside of the United States for the first time and learning to step outside of my comfort zone. Applying to this program required me to take a huge leap of faith because I cannot afford the cost on my own. However, I strongly believe in the program and the benefits it will bring me on a personal, professional, and academic level. This program allows me to take the entirety of physics—a required three course series at my university—within a span of eight weeks. The program is ideal for me because I will be able to save time and open up my academic schedule. Moreover, I will have the opportunity to visit England, a country that I've wanted to travel to since I was a little girl.

The program itself costs about 11K and this high cost is the only thing impeding me from taking part in it. Although I have applied for scholarships, there is still a large portion of the fees that will not be covered. For this reason, I'm raising 4K in hopes of making my dreams into a reality. I believe studying abroad will provide me the opportunity to gain independence by disrupting the bubble I’ve created around myself and embrace change in my life. I hope that being in a new environment forces me to break out of my shell and discover new sides of myself.

Furthermore, the program allows me to fully immerse myself into physics because I won’t have to juggle two or three courses alongside it. I will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the subject and receive more one-on-one help since classes will be smaller. For this reason, I strongly believe I will be able to excel in the program.

Physics is a vital part of how biological systems work and understanding this is important to me since I’m a premed student. Concepts such as force and fluidity are tested on the MCAT, and I want to be prepared and score high. My aspiration in life is to become a physician or psychiatrist. My desire to follow this path is simple—I want to help heal people who are hurting and finishing the physics series brings me one step closer to achieving this goal.
