This year has been very detrimental for my family and I. My mom was laid off from her job last September and besides working 40+ hours a week she also took care of both of my grandparents, one suffering from dementia and both of them having kidney failure and on kidney dialysis.
Shortly after my mom was laid off from her job, my grandparents moved to Florida with my aunt to relieve some of the stress from both my mother and brother, who has spent a lot of time over the past few years helping my mom with my grandparents, dealing with a lot of legal things that my family has gone through, as well as fixing up our house that has been constantly falling apart.
Because of how much care is required for my grandparents, my mom moved to Florida in the beginning of 2016, which in turn left my brother and I to deal with all of the expenses that my mom and grandparents left behind including a car payment, insurance, utilities, property taxes, and other bills.
My brother received a letter in the mail saying that our home was sold in auction because of delinquent property taxes and the new owner can redeem it in December. And on top of all of that, my brother, his wife, and my nephew have been living with no running water, having to go next door and fill up buckets, and also with no ceiling in the kitchen and bathroom due to water damage caused by the roof, repairs that my brother usually handled but has been unable to because of how much he works.
Realizing that my brother and his family will be homeless in a little under a month, we’ve been seeking all the help we can get. I recently picked up a third job all while trying to maintain my grades in college. Our house is past the point of being able to fix it, so if I were able to reach my goal, I would pay off the tax lien on my family’s property and then we would immediately sell it in order to make enough money to start brand new and move the rest of my family from Florida back to Maryland.
