My name is Michele and I’m a Dragon Boater. No idea what that is? Neither did I! Two years ago I chose Dragon Boating instead of Table Tennis at the Corporate Games - and now I find myself raising money as I am travelling to represent Australia in the 2015 World Dragon Boat Championships in Canada!
The reason I am raising money is because this is really a self-funded venture. I do it because I love it – and unfortunately none of us receive government funding to represent this great nation (Australia). While our international competitors will be paid professional athletes this doesn’t mean they have any advantage, it just means that our sacrifices are greater - and hopefully our desire and drive to win will pay off!
Through this self-funded journey I have purchased $900 of Australian uniform (racing, training and ceremonia), $280 of paddling equipment, and numerous flights to attend training camps (Perth & Gold Coast), international competitions (Indonesia) and of course, the World Championships (Canada) - the flights alone have cost over $4,000. As such, I am now fund raising to help pay for some of these costs.

My Journey: Whilst I was expecting to have a quiet one - in a last minute decision I decided to try out for the Australian team and surprisingly I got in! It has been an amazing 12 months of pain but I believe it is all worth it to hopefully receive the ultimate glory of winning a place at the World Championships (not to mention winning small prizes along the way, such as irregular bowel movements from too much protein, minor hypertension from too much creatine, and a stack of medication to manage my bronchitis during the winter season).
Hopefully my sacrifices won’t result in much long term damage – I still have a few friends out there and I still have a good job. Hopefully my family and friends will forgive and forget when I come back with some medals!
