The Oyam district of northern Uganda is recovering from decades of armed conflict that destroyed local infrastructure and caused massive displacement. While the community demonstrates resilience, health outcomes remain poor. The under-5 child mortality rate in Oyam is 3 times higher than all of Uganda. Less than 1 percent of children enrolled in primary school complete secondary school.

To address some of these challenges, Ray Wipfli, 15, launched a campaign (Ray United FC) to fund community-based soccer camps that would provide professional soccer coaching, health education, nutritious food, and clean water to >1,000 Oyam youth annually.  To date, RUFC has reached over 4,000 Ugandan youth through four annual Ray United FC Youth Soccer and Health camps. The camp's educational sessions are developed and delivered by public health students from the US and Uganda  in collaboration with local community members, while soccer training is provided by professional Ugandan coaches. Equal numbers of boys and girls participate in all aspects of the camp. Health topics covered at camp include infectious disease prevention, sexual and reproductive health, avoiding risky behaviors, mental health and resilience, and leadership and communication.

We need your support to make RUFC's 5th Annual Youth Soccer and Health Camp (June 9-15, 2019) bigger and better than ever!

As camp has grown, Ray and his partners have built other services around the event, including teaching adolescent girls how to make reusable sanitary pads so that they can stay in school, providing HIV and other disease testing to hundreds of parents and other adults in the community, offering vaccines to local mothers and their babies, and in 2019, RUFC will be facilitating rabies vaccinations for pets. Survey research is also conducted with camp participants to understand gaps in health knowledge, which will inform more effective evidence-based health programs in the future.

RUFC aims to empower young Ugandans to become leaders in their community through the promotion of health, education and citizenship by providing them with the opportunity to interact with local, national, and international young leaders.  In addition, RUFC aims to provide international volunteers the opportunity to gain appreciation for the talent, intellect, and drive of young Ugandans, and learn about the incredible community- based programs already giving back to youth in the region.

Please donate today to support RUFC's 5th Annual Youth Soccer and Health Camp to be held in Oyam, Uganda, June 9-15, 2019 .  Every dollar is helpful!
