Camp Fixel; My Bat Mitzvah Project

Donation protected
My name is Abigail. I am twelve years old and a seventh grader in Jacksonville, Florida. When a Jewish girl/boy turns twelve or thirteen, they have what is called a Bar/Bat-Mitzvah. A Bat Mitzvah is when a Jewish girl become the age where she turns into a Jewish woman. It is a right of passage in Judaism. Similar to a Confirmation in Christianity where I become an adult religiously. I will lead the services on a Friday night and Saturday morning and read from the Torah.

As part of coming of age as a Bat-Mitzvah, it is my responsibility to do a Mitzvah Project. A Mitzvah is a commandment but, when we are referring to a Bat Mitzvah, we consider it a good deed.

For my Bat-Mitzvah project, I wanted to do something meaningful to me, something that allowed me to become more involved with people in my community. Since I enjoy participating in musical theater, I thought that other kids might love to too. Theater helps children shine. It brings out their inner strength. They become more confident. They become more outspoken, and it even helps them make friends!

As my mother would say, “Go big or go home!” so I have decided for my Mitzvah Project that I am going to organize, produce, and direct, a musical theater camp in Summer of 2017 for children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend a summer camp. Camp Fixel will be held at at Brentwood Elementary School and will be free of charge to 20-25 5-13 year olds living in the urban core of Jacksonville providing two snacks, a lunch, and breakfast each day Monday-Thursday during my two week camp.

I picked the play Princess Whatsername. When I was ten I participated in this play. Princess Whatsername is about a Princess who wakes up and doesn’t remember who she is. As she searches the forest, trying to find out her true identity, she comes into contact with many of the iconic characters. She meets Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother, the Seven Dwarves, and even Goldilocks and Snow White. She meets princes and princess’, villains and heroes, and even a few bears. Throughout her journey, she learns many life lessons. My personal favorite is that friends will stick by you no matter what.

Although I'm hoping to get most of what's needed for Camp Fixel donated, I will need money for things like liability insurance, costume design, purchasing scripts and videotaping the performance so that each family can enjoy it for years to come.

If you wish to help please donate to this GoFundMe!

Thank you,
Abigail
