As the first person from the UK, I have been lucky enough to win a space on the Thor Heyerdahl Classroom Under Sails program (2018-19).  https://kus-projekt.de

Since I was 8 years old I have been dreaming of taking part in this incredible adventure and it's hard to believe that after last year's application and selection week and this year's interview, I have actually been selected as one of the 34 participants for the 2018/2019 cohort.

The programme consists of a 189 day journey on the traditional 3 masted schooner 'Thor Heyerdahl' and is officially recognised as "school" by the Bavarian education ministry.

On board we are organised into watch groups to perform all sailing jobs manually including night guard as well as cleaning and maintainance and cooking for the 50 people on board. We'll also be covering the German grammar school curriculum for my age group.

We leave in October this year and will be living in close quarters, working and studying during the trip from the Baltic, via the North Sea, the English Channel the Bay of Biscay to the Canaries, across the Atlantic, through the Caribbean, to Panama, the continuing to Cuba, Bermuda and the Azores before returning to the Baltic at the end of April 2019.

In Tenerife, Panama and Cuba we will spend time on land, living with local people,  experiencing their culture (and the environment, spiders and all!) working on projects in the community from mountains via jungles to argicultural village schools.  There will be an opportunity to apply for the roles of the crew on board and take over real responsibility during the turn.

Since I have spent two summer schools on the Thor, I know this will be no cruise and I'm sure there will be tough days and homesickness will strike but I believe I will learn much about myself, other cultures and places, discover my limits and contribute and be a part of a tightly knit community like no other.

By the end I hope I will have grown up a lot and will approach all future challenges from a stronger, more mature perspective. This will definitely shape my life going forward.

I can't describe how much this means to me, even though I will have to delay my A-levels by a year because the German curriculum on board doesn't overlap with the British school system.

This is an amazing opportunity and my parents totally support me but I am aware of the huge financial implications. The programme costs over 18.000 Euros ( 100 Euros a day) plus insurance of about 1000£, kit and vaccinations will add an extra 1000£. I'm therefore trying to raise as much money as I can by making things, offering my services to work and sharing my experience to hopefully inspire others and help them to pursue their dreams.

Please help making this possible by sponsoring me. Every contribution will be hugely appreciated and I will make sure you will be part of this journey with me, every step of the way.

Just back from the last information evening before the trip, I am even more excited, but also aware of the fitness training I need to do so that I can cope with the 3 big mountains we are going to climb. I also am going to adjust my packing now that I have a better idea of how cold and hot it’s going to get.
Thanks to everyone who's suppporting me with donations or otherwise.
There are a few things I still need urgently, so if you have a good second hand one of the following I would be grateful if you would let us know:
- Offshore sailing jacket (womens 14/42), It turns out mine is no longer waterproof and can’t be reproofed. This is a vital piece of equipment and very expensive which is a problem so late in the day.
- MP3 Player or similar (music only- it can’t have wifi or video capabilities)
- “Hunger Games” or “Arrivals” DVD for the ships videothek
- A GoPro or other brand action camera
Thank you so much in advance!!!!
