Persecuted for being Christian + political beliefs

Help bring a Refugee Family to Canada

Please help us bring this family of 4 from the Republic of Nauru to Canada, for safe resettlement.

The Refugee Family

*Zahra, *Zain and their parents fled Iran seeking safety, due to fear of persecution based on religious and political beliefs. Zahra experienced imprisonment for going against the rules of the regime, which included wearing western clothing.  Zahra and Zain’s mother spoke out against the regime and was lashed 40 times. The family are Christian, and they are not allowed to openly express or practice their religion in Iran. Their family faced threats from the Iranian authorities and religious police.

(*Please not that the individual's real names have not been used for privacy and safety).

 The Family’s Journey

The family escaped from Iran and made their way to Asia before attempting to reach Australia to seek asylum. The family were intercepted at Christmas Island and sent to Nauru. This was 6 years ago. They have been there ever since.

Despite being found to be genuine refugees, the family are not allowed by the Australian government to be resettled in Australia.

Zain was only 14 when he first arrived in Nauru. He is now 19 years old. For the family’s first 2 years on Nauru, they lived in tents inside the immigration detention center. After being found to be genuine refugees, they were housed in the transit accommodation center, opposite the immigration detention center. The conditions for refugees stuck on Nauru are well documented. The Nobel Peace Prize winning medical organization, Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), has reported that the mental health suffering on Nauru is among the worst MSF has ever seen, including in projects providing care for victims of torture.

A New Start

We want to raise the funds needed to bring the family to Canada for safe resettlement, through the Private Refugee Sponsorship Program.

Before we can submit an application, we need to confirm to the Canadian government that we have funds to support the family’s first 12 months of life in Canada (CAD$44,000 = AUD$49,130 = USD$33,650) and that we have a group of Canadian and Australian sponsors willing to help the family settle into their new life here.

Your donation will contribute to the family’s living expenses for the first year. These include:

·      $33, 600 for 12 months of income

·      $9, 600 for startup costs

(Based on costing for a family of 3, plus 1 extra adult)

The 12 months’ income will go towards the Family’s first year of living expenses, such as housing, food, clothing and transport. The startup costs go towards a one-time payment for expenses such as winter clothing, household items, furniture, linens, and rent deposits. We are aiming for $44, 000 in fundraising for living expenses, with a small margin for unexpected costs.

Plus, we need money to cover the flight debt that refugees are arriving with. This is the cost of their plane ticket. Previous arrivals are being charged $1500, so we are raising an extra $6000 to cover the cost of 4 tickets. If we are successful in having the flight debt waived, even partially, we will onward direct these funds to the next individual(s) that Ads UP is sponsoring. That brings the fundraising total to $50,000 CAD.

As money is donated, I will transfer it in full from my account to be held in trust in a secure bank account managed by Community Matters Toronto, a registered charity that will also serve as The Family’s official sponsor. When the family arrives, the money will be disbursed by Community Matters Toronto, under guidelines laid out by the Canadian government.

Who Are We?

We are part of a group of committed volunteers who are ready and excited to help the family start a new life. We belong to Ads-Up (Australian Diaspora Steps Up), a network of Australian expatriates who believe that the conditions of indefinite detention on Manus Island and Nauru, and on the mainland, go against Australian principles of fairness and decency. All based in Toronto, our circle includes Juliet Donald and other Toronto residents.

We have our sponsorship group in place, and we now just need the necessary funds. As soon as we have raised this money and it is in the secure bank account managed by Community Matters Toronto (who will oversee the application), we can submit the paperwork and start the formal process of getting the family off Nauru and to Canada where they can start their lives again.

Zahra, Zain and their parents reached out to Ads-Up to via our website. They are motivated for sponsorship and have consent to the information contained on this page to be used for fundraising.

We Need Your Help

If you can help, please click on the “Donate” button. As your donations come in, we will transfer these funds my from account registered with Go Fund Me to Community Matters, who will hold the money until we reach the target.

When the family arrives, the money will be disbursed under guidelines laid out by the Canadian government. Start-up funds are given on arrival in Canada and the living expenses are distributed to the family on a monthly basis.

Every dollar brings us one step toward bringing this family to a new start in a country they are looking forward to calling their home. Please help us bring Zahra, Zain and their parents here today.
