If you haven’t heard of Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, or VHL, I wouldn’t be surprised. Only 1 in 36,000 people are affected by this rare genetic condition and one of them is my 16 year old niece Isabella, or Bella.

VHL is when a gene is mutated and causes tumours and cysts to grow all over the body - in the brain, spine, ears, eyes and kidneys predominantly.

Isabella’s father Peter suffered from a concussion at age 30. After some very odd behaviour, he was taken in for brain scans which revealed a tumour. At first, we thought it was just a brain tumour but more tests diagnosed him with VHL.

When Peter was first diagnosed, Bella was only 5. My sister Kris and Peter now had to test their child for an incurable disease knowing her odds were 50/50.

Pete has since undergone 5 brain surgeries and 1 kidney surgery and Bella had her first brain surgery at age 11. With this disease you not only face the mental and emotional stressors of constant scans to monitor tumour growth and surgeries to remove them but the financial stress that comes with hospital visits, scans, surgeries and the recovery time out of work or school.

Unfortunately after countless applications and phone calls they’ve been told by the Government that they aren’t ‘sick enough’ to qualify for financial assistance or a health care card, meaning their regular scans and tests are fully out of pocket.

Bella is about to leave the care of the Royal Children’s Hospital when she turns 18 and will have to cover the costs of the regular scans for the rest of her life. She has a date for the 14th of March 2019 to go in for her second brain surgery.

Bella is one of my favourite people in the world. She is witty, sarcastic, kind, compassionate, and an avid gamer like me. My sister Kristina has always been there for me - helping me through college overseas, always being the shoulder I can lean on and putting herself behind all others.

Bella is a warrior, and battles this crazy life with utmost class. Even as I want to raise this money for her, she wants to donate 10% of any money raised to the VHL Alliance. This organisation works to raise awareness for this rare disorder and is working to find a cure.

Please share this and show Isabella people care.

On the 18th of April after 4 previous surgery cancellations, Bella had a successful surgery to remove a tumour from her brain and spine. She spent a few days in hospital and is now at home resting and recovering.

We thank you all for your encouraging words of support and generous donations for Bella to date. If you would still like to donate, everything is appreciated.

THANKYOU!
