The documentary 'A Mother's Courage' changed the way I understand education and communication in non-verbal children. The DVD introduced me to the Rapid Prompting Method of teaching developed by Soma Mukhodhyay. RPM presumes competence and comprehension and works from there. Cornell University published a positive study done on RPM a few years ago.
I studied the RPM textbooks and watched videos to understand the process and began trying it with Daniel in 2010. He cannot communicate in typical ways because of his neurological issues. Recently I bought a large letter board, and after years of working on phonics and spelling at home, we started using RPM to identify letters and begin independent spelling. I'm more excited about this than any other method we've tried over the years.
This spring we plan to travel to Austin, Texas to be trained by Soma, the founder of the Rapid Prompting Method. I've heard wonderful things about her ability to help non-verbal people use RPM to learn and communicate. It is reasonably priced, but with travel and hotel costs, it's going to be difficult since insurance does not cover RPM. Regardless, I will do whatever I can to raise the funds and make sure he is given the chance to use his voice.
I can't believe we'll be leaving for Austin next month. This has been a dream for so long, and I feel completely confident that this is going to be life changing for Daniel. He is working hard on the lessons at home, and once we have input and guidance from Soma, there will be no limit to what we can accomplish. Thank you so much for helping make this a reality for us.
We're steadily moving forward, checking airline ticket prices and shopping for the best hotel deals. We do an RPM session nearly everyday after school and twice daily on weekends. It's exciting to know that we'll be working with Soma just over three months from now. Thank you to all who are helping us make this dream a reality!
We're working on pointing and choosing every day now. The improvement I'm seeing is surprising me. I knew he'd get it, but I thought it might take longer. Knowing that we're meeting Soma in Austin keeps my enthusiasm level high, and I know Daniel is feeling that and responding to it. Thanks to everyone that's helping. We're doing this!
We're halfway there (who finished that sentence with Bon Jovi lyrics?) I'm writing a blog post about Rapid Prompting, and I hope to make a short video so that friends and family will know more about what we're praying for. Love you all!
