TEENOMOPHOBIA: Teenagers and Technology

Dear friends, family, art lovers and patrons,

As many of you who know me, I have been totally committed to my art as a photographer for many, many years now.

The life of an artist is not often easy, especially in seeing projects through to completion.  In the past, I have relied on my own funding to support my projects but this is no longer possible.  Governments and private organizations often provide funding for artists through a competitive application process judged by a jury of peers.  But as the resources at their disposal are often stretched and limited, securing a grant is most of the time, a very difficult and sometimes next to impossible challenge.

The project I am appealing to you to help me fund is relevant, timely and beneficial to many people.  It involves teenagers and their obsessive addiction to social media and technology. This has become a well-documented and serious medical issue of our time.  The premise is that young people now suffer from stress and anxiety, depression and other mental issues which experts have agreed is closely tied to the surge in recent years of teen’s usage of technology.

My goal is to initiative positive change  by putting a major call out to do environmental and studio portraits of these young subjects and have them write about how they feel about themselves, in a few short sentences, in the hope that a cathartic moment will occur in the creative process where they will reflect on themselves and their patterns in order to change their behavior.  In any case, the process will be engaging, rewarding and educational.

I need the funding I am asking for to initiate this project successfully so that young people can benefit and the mental health organizations I will be working with can benefit from my findings to help in their research. To my knowledge, a photo project of this scope has never been undertaken before.

The methodology I will use is similar to the critically acclaimed photo series I did in 2008 on women’s body image, This Is My Body, which was cited by the art critic for the Toronto Star as "one of the most truly important and mesmerizing photo projects to come out of this city in the past five years or more."

A photo exhibition and self-published photo book tentatively titled, Teenomophobia, is planned for 2020.

I would be extremely grateful for your financial support.  Any amount you see fit within your means would be greatly appreciated.   Donations by credit, debit card and personal cheque are all accepted.  A few donations both small and big have already come and the campaign is just launched.

A donation of between $250.00 and $500.00  will get you a personal invitation to the reception at the opening  of the exhibition sometime in 2020.

A donation of $500.00 to $1000.00 will get you a personal invitation to the opening reception of the exhibition as well as a signed copy of the book.

A donation of over $1000.00 will get you a personal invitation to the opening reception of the exhibition, a signed copy of the book as well as a signed original print from the series.

Thank you so much.  I am excited to get this project underway.  Your contribution will be a big help in making that happen.
