My name is Humberto Filipe Martins and I am a 23 year old aspiring commercial pilot. I am currently awaiting my last 2 flights (Mock and Exam), which will be the culmination of 4 and a half years of training, alongside obtaining a university degree, and a huge step towards fulfilling a childhood dream.
For those of you who may not know, pilot training can be an expensive endeavour, and like so many other students, my training has been mainly funded by parents and family friends. Upon finishing university last summer, I enrolled on Commercial course in order to complete my training, whilst simultaneously taking up a part-time job to help pay for the rest of my training and alleviating the financial burden on my parents; my sister has recently started a nursing degree and my family will also have to help put her through university. All of this whilst commuting 2hrs each way in order to save having to pay rent and help stretch my funds towards completing my license.
Unfortunately due the combined stress coming from work, home, commuting, and studying for my course, the cost of my training has overrun, since I have needed extra hours in order to achieve the required standard. For the most part, my family and I were able to cope with the overruns and I was able to successfully pass my Instrument Rating on the first attempt in November 2018.
Now, in February 2019 I am just one flight and an exam away from obtaining a Commercial Pilot’s License and one step closer to realising my childhood dream. However, due to my overruns I have had to delay my Mock and Exam. With my sister in a nursing course, my family have to also help her throughout her time at university, and undertaking long shifts and overtime at work in order to help increase my funds has not been enough. This is extremely disheartening as I am extremely close and within touching distance of completing my course, not being able to continue due to insufficient funds has made me feel like I’m falling at the last hurdle which is a devastating feeling.
I am therefore aiming to raise £1,200 to help cover the remaining fees which goes towards renting the aircraft, instructor and examiner fees, and license application fees. Please donate anything you can and share with friends and family.
