Whether it’s a bush fires, blazes, urban fires or floods…. Our firemen are always on the front line selflessly stretching out a hand to anyone and anything in need, even a cat in a tree or a dog in a hole, and they always put their own well-being last… These men are a unique breed, worldwide. They put their own well-being last time and time again… but they still have families at home, parents, wives, children all with their loved ones constantly on their minds because their loved ones are out their battling for us putting their lives on the line…The greatest threat to the firemen, and our island, of course, are the relentless fires we experience year in year out… and in nightmare scenarios, with nightmare record numbers in blazes, these men never cease to amaze us… and we try to show our love and gratitude and we humble before them because there simply are no words… but there are deeds. WE PUT OUR MONEY WHERE OUR MOUTHS ARE…A most generous donator, a local company that wishes to remain anonymous, gifted a massive water truck to the Zakynthos Fire Department. A gesture most worthy of our heroes. It’s a monster! It can transport 32 tonnes (!!!) of water to anywhere on the island; water is always a dire issue during the hotter months, and this provides the FD with the ability to not have to rely on any (much smaller) municipality or private water trucks when disaster strikes. The truck is in good, fully working condition BUT it needs tyres… 6 of them… money which the FD does not have at its disposal from the State. This is the sad story amidst the joy of this amazing donation straight from the mouth of FD Chief Dimitris Patrakis who was so astonished by the outpour of love and respect last time that he felt he could reach out to us.
