If you take a moment to fix your hair or pick a flattering outfit from your closet, you understand. If you bought a new scarf, put blush on your cheeks, or groomed a beard, you understand. If oyu took even a moment to consider what makes you feel good, how you see yourself and the way the world sees you, you understand.

But what if putting something on or taking it off wasn't enough: you needed to change yourself? Instead you hide behind standards of beauty to mask insecurities and faults. Beyond wearing make-up or buying expensive clothing; you would sacrifice your health and peace of mind with every doubt, every feeling of lineliness, and every failure. Could you understand that?

Eating disorders are not a fad, nor are they a ploy for attention. Ironically, they are a beautiful addiction. Willingly allowing your body and life to deteriorate in an elaborate attempt to cover up vulnerable human pieces with external beauty is an addiction. Families and friends lose the whole person they knew to a mere shell. And when the mind is long gone and the body cannot keep up its charade, no one understands what to do for this person, who has long since succombed to their addiction.

It is from my own experiences with anorexia and those I have seen regain their lives from this disorder that I am applying to start a chapter of ProjectHEAL in Madison, WI. Project HEAL is a cooperative network of patients, families, and professionals whose mission is to provide access to support and resources for people living with eating disorders who cannot afford lengthy, expensive treatment. My goal is to use my personal experiences and compassion for the community to promote better understanding of the sources and impact of ED throught the following:

- Public events displaying original works by those effected by ED to redefine what the illness means
-Resources for families of patients
-Connections with local medical professionals
- Mentor/support relationships with others in varying stages of recovery and/or those unaffected
-Partner with the national Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) to sponsor awareness walks and other events

I am proud to say that an ED-free future is within reach for me. I am conquering my addiction, but I could not have done it alone. I had the love and support of everyone willing to listen. Now it's my turn to give back to the community that got me here. Recovery is possible for everyone with an eating disorder, and it can be done through understanding.

By funding a chapter of projectHEAL in Madison, you will be telling the people in the community living with eating disorders that you are listening and joining their fight. Please help promote a community with a better understanding of the impact of ED on individuals and their families. you never know whose future you may be saving.

Thank you. From past, present, and future Hillary
