“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

In late August 2018, Ivar travelled to Whistler with his family to celebrate his grandmother’s 90th birthday. During this time, he had a biking accident and suffered a severe spinal cord injury. Ivar had an immediate and critical surgery to repair his spinal cord damage. He was then in ICU for 2 weeks. The doctor’s diagnosis is a high level C4 incomplete spinal cord injury which resulted in paralysis from chest down.

For those of us who know Ivar, we know so well of his quiet strength, his big heart, his positive spirit, and his service to others, always smiling, laughing, and encouraging.

He took this debilitating injury with calmness, strength and courage. He embraced this life-changing event as the greatest challenge of his life. Each day he works with determination to recover, and believing that surely but slowly, things will improve.

The outpour of thoughts, prayers, and love for him from all of his friends and family have been overwhelmingly felt. As his good friend Patrick said… “ if the recovery depends on how much prayer, thoughts and love are going your way, soon enough, you will be flying, not only walking.”

Ivar has had a major surgery to repair his vertebrae and spinal cord, and also several other necessary medical procedures. He has also experienced many secondary medical complications that are frequent to this type of injury, but he's been amazing and brave in getting through each challenge. And it is his happy spirit and calm nature that reassure all of us around him that he will be okay, and that he will take on whatever comes with his full efforts.

He has also been far from home since the injury, from Vancouver General Hospital, to Craig Hospital in Denver CO, and soon to be discharged and transferred to Chicago for further outpatient therapy treatments. And due to the severity of his injury, he is also looking for new medical treatments or participating in clinical researches. Unfortunately, as the family has learned throughout this process, many treatments and therapies are not covered by insurance. It is a great travesty that not only him but anyone dealing with severe medical injuries or conditions have to also take on heavy financial burdens of a lifetime cost of medical expenses and equipments and assistance,  and struggles in dealing with complex healthcare and insurance systems. We are very grateful and we appreciate very much any contribution or help that is given towards helping Ivar in this long journey to recovery.
