Mom's Stage IV Breast Cancer Fight

Donation protected
My mom's back has hurt her for a few months, but she is a nurse and figured she just strained it at work moving patients around. The day my dad was supposed to come home from the hospital after having emergency gallbladder removal surgery, my mom woke up to get ready for the day and she heard a pop and felt a sharp pain in her back. She went to the emergency room because the pain was so bad. (Mom never takes anyone to the ER because she feels whatever it is can wait for a doctors visit so she must have been hurting really bad to go.)

I was waiting with my dad so I could take him home to recover from surgery when they told us to come to the ER so the doctor could talk to my dad and mom together. We were stunned to find out that mom's hurt back was really cancer. We didn't know exactly what kind that day, but we have since learned she has Stage IV metastatic breast cancer that has moved to her spine.

The picture of my mom for this page is actually one she took the last night she worked, September 23, 2018. To see her now, it's hard to believe it is the same person. Now she can barely walk and is using a rolling walker. Her pain has become so bad that she now is using a bedside commode to go to the bathroom and we have a shower chair so she can sit while cleaning up. She can barely move in bed and for her to change positions in bed it takes a long time. She doesn't have much of an appetite and often throws up what she eats because she isn't used to taking medicine stronger than Tylenol or Motrin. I am a CNA so I have been helping a lot with caring for her.

The first bills came in the mail today from our insurance company showing what we still owe after they paid. $3,500. Wow! That's just the first set of bills too! Mom is the primary breadwinner for our house and carries our health insurance through her job at a hospital. Luckily mom’s job has pretty good insurance, but the bills we already have are more than we can afford. Dad works at the local college to help put my brother and Mom (Mom had been taking full-time classes in addition to working full-time) through college, and I was planning on starting as well in January. We are also nervous because our income is a lot less than before since Mom made good money as a nurse.

Any help you could give us would be great and give us one less thing to worry about while we focus on helping Mom fight her best fight against Stage IV breast cancer! If you would like to follow Mom's updates on her Caring Bridge page, click here.
