Mom's Stage IV Breast Cancer Fight

My mom's back has hurt her for a few months, but she is a nurse and figured she just strained it at work moving patients around. The day my dad was supposed to come home from the hospital after having emergency gallbladder removal surgery, my mom woke up to get ready for the day and she heard a pop and felt a sharp pain in her back. She went to the emergency room because the pain was so bad. (Mom never takes anyone to the ER because she feels whatever it is can wait for a doctors visit so she must have been hurting really bad to go.)

I was waiting with my dad so I could take him home to recover from surgery when they told us to come to the ER so the doctor could talk to my dad and mom together. We were stunned to find out that mom's hurt back was really cancer. We didn't know exactly what kind that day, but we have since learned she has Stage IV metastatic breast cancer that has moved to her spine.

The picture of my mom for this page is actually one she took the last night she worked, September 23, 2018. To see her now, it's hard to believe it is the same person. Now she can barely walk and is using a rolling walker. Her pain has become so bad that she now is using a bedside commode to go to the bathroom and we have a shower chair so she can sit while cleaning up. She can barely move in bed and for her to change positions in bed it takes a long time. She doesn't have much of an appetite and often throws up what she eats because she isn't used to taking medicine stronger than Tylenol or Motrin. I am a CNA so I have been helping a lot with caring for her.

The first bills came in the mail today from our insurance company showing what we still owe after they paid. $3,500. Wow! That's just the first set of bills too! Mom is the primary breadwinner for our house and carries our health insurance through her job at a hospital. Luckily mom’s job has pretty good insurance, but the bills we already have are more than we can afford. Dad works at the local college to help put my brother and Mom (Mom had been taking full-time classes in addition to working full-time) through college, and I was planning on starting as well in January. We are also nervous because our income is a lot less than before since Mom made good money as a nurse.

Any help you could give us would be great and give us one less thing to worry about while we focus on helping Mom fight her best fight against Stage IV breast cancer! If you would like to follow Mom's updates on her Caring Bridge page, click here.

Thanks everyone from all of the Falks!

Mom is doing much better and we are so happy to see her able to do things for herself and get out and just try to be normal. She had surgery in November then was able to take a trip to Arizona to see her sister and California to see the ocean as something on her bucket list. She hopes to return to work soon. As good as she is doing, the bills continue to roll in. Losing Moms income has been very hard on our family. But as hard as its been we are happy to watch mom get better and as a family we are happy everyday. Thank you all for your continuing support!

This month has been full of ups and downs. Mom is able to get up and move so much better. It makes us all feel better to see her getting around without being in as much pain as she was a few weeks ago. We had been hoping they could do a procedure on her back to help it heal faster. She had a MRI to see if she qualified for it, but we found out that her spine has too much damage for either of the two things her doctor had been suggesting. So she will keep getting an injection to strengthen her bones and we will wait and hope it heals on it’s own. Next up on her plate is a hysterectomy at the end of November. That will keep her laid up again for a couple weeks. We’ve been trying to intercept the medical bills as they come in. Even after insurance, so much has been unpaid. That combined with losing her income has been stressful. She only has about a month left of her insurance from her work before it switches to a COBRA payment and we won’t be able to afford that. Christmas will be slim this year, but Mom is still here and that’s the best gift we could ask for. We appreciate all of the help everyone has given us these past few weeks and all of the prayers are working. Thank you everyone! It means so much!

So many people are out there pulling for my mom and that means so much. She is doing better physically. She is walking on her own with a walker around the house which is making her feel so much better to regain some independence. Her pain is better. You can tell getting around still hurts her, but we can tell she isn’t in the excruciating pain she was a couple weeks ago. Her doctor is great and he’s giving Mom the best chance he can. Mom is almost out of vacation and sick time at work now. She is the one who takes care of most of our bills so our Dad can work at the college so my brother can go to school. Now that mom is sick, we aren’t sure what’s going to happen. Her job pays the health insurance and keeps our house paid for. It’s scary. But right now we are going to try not to think about that. Seeing Mom doing better, seeing her walk around without help is all that matters. Right now all we have is hope and we are going to hold onto all of it!

Thank you to everyone who has donated to help us out! Mom has started treatment to block her hormones and will start chemotherapy next month. She is starting her fourth week without work and the bills just from treatments have started coming in, not counting the bills from our normal daily like. Thank you for helping give her a little less to worry about because we need her primary focus to be getting herself well!
