Flapjack Reconstructive Surgery

Donation protected

1/14/14 UPDATE: Flapjack's surgery went AMAZINGLY well! The unbelievable doctors at Animal Care Center of Chicago literally performed a miracle on his jaw/mouth. The surgeon was able to repair Flapjack's jaw and save a portion of his lip/jowl, which has been reconnected to his jaw through a series of temporary wires. We anticipate a 4-week recovery period, and if all goes well, Flapjack will be a completely happy, healthy, normal pup with a fully-functioning mouth. We are absolutely over the moon about this and could not be more grateful to those of you who have donated towards his care and to the staff at the Animal Care Center of Chicago. They are the most incredible group of veterinarians we've ever met. THANK YOU to everyone who help make this happen. Huge hugs and love from Abby, Kelly and Flapjack!

Flapjack, a 1.5 year old pitbull mix, was found abandoned in a Chicago field late night on Sunday, 1/5/14 as temperatures were plummeting to negative 20 degrees. Emaciated and freezing, the lower half of Flapjack's face and jaw hangs disconnected from the bone due to massive, untreated bite wounds from another dog. Flapjack was rescued by an Animal Care and Control Officer and brought to the local pound, where he was able to receive warmth, pain medication and have a portion of the infected, decaying tissue removed from his jaw. However, the extent of Flapjack's injuries require extensive surgery by a reconstructive specialist. The puncture wounds to his face pierced the bone, severed an artery and removed both the tissue and muscle from the bone, making it extremely difficult to repair. Flapjack is currently undergoing series of antibiotic rounds and pain management treatment in order to be healthy enough to undergo surgery on Monday, 1/13/14. He is in wonderful spirits, LOVES to be close to people, seeking affection, and wags his tail happily when he sees the other dogs! He is such an amazingly kind, resilient and forgiving dog who just wants to get healthy and find a home of his own. We hope you will be able to help support us in raising the money needed to cover Flapjacks surgery. No matter how big or how small, every single donation counts.

Through our past work with Willow (the emaciated pitbull) and Willow's Fund, Felines & Canines animal shelter has created a program focused exclusively on rescuing and rehabilitating friendly dogs and cats that have experienced exceptional levels of abuse/neglect. We absolutely can't keep this program alive without your support. We rescue animals directly based on the resources we have available to care for them. Thank you for your support of Flapjack and Willow's Fund.
