3 Months Book Research in France

Donation protected
Have you ever had a dream so big that it seemed almost impossible to achieve? I have. I do. I need to follow in the footsteps of Josephine Baker, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Angela Davis, Nina Simone and other Black artists from the Harlem Renaissance and beyond who found a dazzling light and warm welcome in France, especially Paris. From the 1920’s, the city welcomed and embraced us at a time when America’s discrimination, genocide and hatred of people of African descent was at its highest. At that time, people like me found room for their dreams in France.

From the realization of my dream, I will create a novel. This novel, loosely based on the life of Angelina Weld Grimke, a black lesbian poet, will be full of romance, Blackness, and beauty. Not just the beauty of Paris but the fierce flavor that brown-skinned people have brought to the city that now boasts one of the most popular jazz festivals in the world, and to a country that now has a Black Miss France.

When you choose to give, your contribution will go toward my three months of research into the life of African-American expatriates from the Harlem Renaissance and after, their day to day lives, elements of the City of Light that spoke to them. Funds will also go toward exploration of the places where these artists roamed and created - Josephine Baker’s French château, the Montmartre neighborhood, Goutte d'Or (Little Africa), and other spaces usually hidden from outsiders.

You can help make this incredible dream of a project come true with your love offerings. Any amount you can give will be an amazing help.

Thank you!
