Get Kathy To The Lir

Hey guys.....it has been two incredible years since I started this page and I made it....ALMOST!

I have hit the trifecta of setbacks heading in to my final year including a huge cut to my sole source of funding, a rent hike and (albeit very exciting) the addition of Saturday rehearsals which will restrict my ability to work this year. All of which made me seriously consider if I could return. I am at the end of a very hard, long road to get to this point.

Last year was a huge challenge even without all these new barriers I struggled every week to make ends meet. As a mature student I am not eligible for student loans or maintenance so I travelled to and from Belfast every weekend to work up to 24 hours at Waterfront and Ulster Halls. I had hopes of getting a job in Dublin but my rent agreement was weekedays only in first year so I had to go home on Friday which made it difficult so I have carried on at Waterfront and Ulster Halls - a job I’ve been at since I was 18 years old. It’s really flexible with lots of hours available when I have time to work plus the most compelling reason to work in Belfast..... I can stock up on food from family before heading back down the road! This gave me just about enough to support myself. However it was a treadmill returning each Monday without a break is tough. A typical week at Drama School is 10am - 6:30/7:30pm each day with additional rehearsals before and after college often up to 50hours per week in school running scenes, learning lines researching, practicing choreography, working on group presentations etc etc etc only to jump on the bus on Friday night for a 6:30am start in work....and repeat. I also ran my business as a kids entertainer to make additional money to support myself -  and entertaining 30 kids full of sweets and chocolate for two hours demands so much energy and positive vibes!

It was a huge learning curve and I managed it but I almost burnt out in the process and now with half the funding and more rent to pay it’s not gonna get any easier.

After exhausting every means possible, the overdraft is well and truly maxed an unholy amount of hours have been worked, I have sent 1 billion letters to charities, trusts and funds to try to make it to the end of my training but I am coming up short.

I would be grateful for any support to get me the rest of the way there! I have one more year to go and its the most important one. I will be performing in five different productions, a showcase at The Lir and in RADA and a short film all in the next twelve months.

Please read my original campaign and a bit about my training below ----

Hello I'm Kathy - an actor, singer, sort-of dancer, children's entertainer and all round drama queen!

I can't freaking believe it but.......I have been offered a place to study Acting at The Lir National Academy of Dramatic Art in Dublin starting on the 19th Spetember 2016. Check out all their awesomeness here - http://www.thelir.ie/

To take up this amazing offer I am currently doing everything in my power to raise the funds including working several jobs. I recently finished a ten week children's theatre tour, I'm working Front of House at the Waterfront and Ulster Hall's, selling newspapers and I have even started my own children's entertainment company - that's right you can hire me as Queen Elsa for a day! As a student with a previous undergrad degree fees are €9678 per year for me and a student loan is unfortunately not an option so even with all my efforts the pressure is truly on. Therefore I would be very grateful for any support from my family and friends (even perfect strangers) to help me fund the first year of fees and tick this off my bucket list.

A Bit About Me
Gaining a place at a Drama School has long been a dream of mine and something I have been working towards for years. While still in school I competed in Speech & Drama Festivals, I performed at Beat Carnivals in Belfast..

Warming up on the float at City Hall, Belfast.

And I joined the National Youth Theatre training and performing with them in London during my summers.

Performing at The Old Vic Tunnels in London with The National Youth Theatre.

At 17/18 I auditioned for several prestigious drama schools around the UK getting to lots of final rounds however I was not successful. I put it down to a combination of a baby-face and a lack of life experience. So I tied my spotted red hanky to a stick and travelled across Europe touring a Theatre in Education show.

On stage in Europe.

I then moved to London where I worked hard on my dream to earn a living through acting. To support myself I had day jobs including skincare consultant in Harrods, usher at Almeida Theatre, cloakroom assistant and children's entertainer in between performing  in lots of children's theatre, off West End productions and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It gave me lots of life experience and a very interesting CV!

Onstage in One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest with Fourth Monkey Theatre Co. at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Peculiar Tale of Pablo Picasso and the Mona Lisa Off West End at The Brockley Jack Theatre London.

This year I started  wondering "what if..?" and afterall God loves a trier so I decided to give it one more go!  With all of this experience behind me I mustered the courage to brave the intensive audition process at this incredible school I had set my heart on. There were three rounds of auditions which tested movement, scene work, voice and prepared speeches.  With thousands of actors auditioning for only 16 places I am a very lucky actor indeed. This opportunity will open up many more doors and help me to become a more confident and versatile performer. I hope to leave ready to take on bigger challenges, develop my own work and grace a stage or screen near you!

I can't overstate how much your donations will mean to me! If you aren't in a position to donate, maybe you can share this fundraising page with your friends? Or hire Queen Elsa - [email redacted] for your next party! ;D

All the love and hugs,
