Legacy Preparatory Academy

This GoFundMe initiative is on behalf of Legacy Preparatory Academy (LPA), a Hillsborough County public charter school.  LPA is a triple-A rated school and was recently awarded high performing status by the Florida Department of Education (three consecutive A grades).  The school is unique, not only because of its small size, but also its student demographics.  Ninety-eight percent of LPA’s student population is eligible to receive free or reduced price lunch and over 70% of students reside in a single parent household.  Almost all incoming students fail to read at their appropriate grade level and a large percentage of 6th grade students are at a 3rd grade level or below. 

Even though we have had great academic success, the lack of funding opportunities for public charter schools have negatively affected our abilities to reach a larger student population.  The biggest advantage we’ll have beginning in the next school year is being able to transition to a K-8 school.  This would allow us to attract more students and meet our enrollment objectives.

This fundraising initiative is important because LPA is a Title I school, reaching the most at-risk demographic with respect to educational achievement.  Typically, much of school fundraising is done with the assistance of parent involvement and through the network of contacts established by the school.  Unfortunately, our school is small and our demographic is not well connected, but we know that we have a great story to tell and our staff has proven they can get results.
