My son Ryan is 8 years old. On December 9th 2013 he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He now is insulin dependent and receives 7 shots per day and 12 pokes for accu checks ( checking his blood sugar). Ryan's blood sugar is not yet controlled and his medication dosage changes almost daily. His blood drops dangerously low throughout the day but mainly at night while he sleeps, which is the worst possible time because it is the most dangerous for him due to the fact that he ( and everyone in the house) is asleep. Ryan also has extreme highs with his blood sugar as well. The reason for the fundraising is so that we can get Ryan a D.A.D, a diabetic assist dog. Ryan's endocrinologist suggested the dog because of the lack of control in his blood sugars. The dog will alert Ryan and us if his blood sugar is getting low or high. The dogs are trained to alert Ryan to eat if he is low or take his shot if high. There are a million reasons why I believe this is needed but one is that Ryan lives in fear everyday, we live in fear everyday. We wake up praying our son is still alive. The dog will give Ryan and the family much needed peace of mind. The cost of the dog is 16000. The family will also need traveling expenses because we will need to fly to Texas to Dreys alert dogs to pickup the dog and spend three days there learning how the dog alerts and being trained on do's and dont's of an assist dog.
I never thought I would be in this position, never thought my child would need a assist dog, never thought I'd be doing fundraisers for him but this is our new reality and I am determined to give my son his life back, his security back and I have spent hours, days, weeks researching these dogs and Drey's organization and I believe with my entire soul that this will change my sons life. Thank you in advance for supporting Ryan, words will never express our gratitude. God Bless.

I got a call at work today from ryan and Dave both were very upset, our son had a doctor appointment at our family doctors office and ryan had brought Gabe with him. They were told Gabe wouldn't be allowed in the examining room, the receptionist had made a few rude comments about the dog and began starring at ryan then after Dave politely said yes we are taking our service dog back to the room with us, security was called and the officer walked into the examining room and stated Gabe was just a pet and demanded to see his " papers" to save a scene Dave told him we didn't have papers but Gabe is wearing his vest and certification badge. They said a few more rude comments about him being " just a pet" and left for my son to continue with his appointment. Unfortunately this happens to ryan often and it is so upsetting for
Him. He thought if all places surely it wouldn't happen at a doctors office, I'm am so disappointed that yes it did. It's hard for
Me to keep telling ryan he is no different when people keep pointing out that he is. I want to point out that while this was all
Going on Gabe was under perfect command and never broke once. I feel bad for ryan and I just do not understand why this keeps happening.

You seem like a very brave little boy with loving, supportive parents. I know this diagnosis can be scary because I have Type 1 diabetes too. I've had it for 50 years. I want you to know once your blood sugars are better controlled and you have had some time to adjust you can do everything in life you want. I've had a very full life. I went to college, got married, had a daughter and have my own business. Hang in there!!!

I have diabetes since I was 9. I understand your fear and especially your little boy's. It will get easier as he gets older and can recognize the signs of both highs and lows. If I can give you one piece of advice, don't let his diabetes every stop him from doing anything he wants to do. My parents taught me that and it is one lesson all children with diabetes need to remember!
